Now that PJ has signed what posy will he play?

I for one don't think he is a halfback, but makes an excellent hooker or impact player off the bench. His running game is his feature and coming off the bench or starting hooker maybe the best posy for him. And u can add Moriss to that list as well, U need to have some pace to at least be a good 5/8.

What does everyone think?

Wherever he plays, on paper we truely have a side capable of going all the way next year.

It's the strongest side on paper that we have ever fielded since Smith has been coach. No excuses next year [-X

I beg to differ!

I think he'll make an excellent halfback and I have sneaking suspicion that Smithy was dangling that no.7 shirt in front of his eyes. ;-)

Even though he has been given medical clearance, I'm not sure that hooker would be great for Marsh's long term health. I'd say it would have to be half back.
I think Witt will come off the bench in #14.

As excited as I am to see Marsh back with the team, I still think it's going to take a while for him to regain form and confidence.

confidence im not too worried about i have met him a few times know and from seeing how hr plays, he is a very cocky player....expect him to go guns from day 1 but the question is if his form will allow this?

Assuming Marsh is healthy I find this suggestion ludicrous. Marsh is still young, is more explosive, more experienced and better then Witt in every regard.

Marsh returns to Eels
September 1, 2004 - 2:09PM

Uncertainty over PJ Marsh's fitness has not stopped Parramatta welcoming back the former Queensland Origin hooker.

The class utility has not received a final medical clearance and has not played an NRL game in 14 months due to a serious neck injury.

However, Marsh, 24, was reportedly the subject of a four club tug-of-war after being released by the New Zealand Warriors last week.

Marsh on Wednesday decided to choose a Parramatta return, agreeing to a two year contract with the Eels which are assembling an arsenal of stars for 2005.

Besides Marsh, the Eels have also recruited the likes of Test winger Timana Tahu from Newcastle, Dragons hooker Mark Riddell and North Queensland backrower Glenn Morrison.

Marsh hasn't played since round 14 last year after dislocating vertebrae - coincidentally against his former club Parramatta - and has since gone under the knife twice to rectify the problem.

But Eels football manager Tony Zappia said Marsh was expected to receive a full medical clearance next week.

"All our offers are subject to medical clearances. He's got one more clearance to get through but so far everything has been positive and he's three quarters of the way through it," he said.

"Probably next week (he'll receive a clearance)."

Asked if the Eels were anxious over Marsh's fitness, Zappia said "I'm not a medical person but everything looks okay, he's got one more set of tests but everything seems to be positive."

Zappia said Marsh's return would be a homecoming of sorts for the ex-Eels rake.

"It's been a long road hasn't it?," he said.

Marsh turned heads at Parramatta in his first two years of first grade (2000-01) before relocating to the New Zealand Warriors in 2002 and earning Origin selection.

However, the serious neck injury kept Marsh out of action at the Warriors for the best of the past two seasons and at one stage threatened his career.

While Marsh shone at hooker when last at Parramatta, Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald said Marsh would be considered for "halfback, five-eighth or hooker", with his eye on the No.7 role currently held by youngster Michael Witt.

"This is great news for the club. PJ has established himself as one of the best halfbacks in the game, and adds to the tremendous depth in our playing roster for 2005," Fitzgerald said.

"PJ will play a vital role in the Parramatta resurgence.

"He left us at the end of the 2001 season as a player with great potential, and he has certainly fulfilled that. He will be a tremendous asset to our club in 2005."

Witt is not coming off 2 major spinal operations.

THAT is why I assume Phillips named Marsh in the #14. If Marsh proves himself as 'fully fit' then he deserves the #7.

I see it as naive to think he will have no problems at all getting back into the swing of full contact NRL footy.

I said assume Marsh is "healthy.", meaning he has recovered physically and mentally from his neck injury.

With Riddell & Morris already at the club, I doubt very much that they would have recruited PJ to play as a hooker. Makes no sense.

The club showed it's hand earlier in the year when they threw $400k at Matt Orford, a halfback. They didn't get him so they started looking at other options...PJ.

I'm 99.9% certain PJ has been recruited to play in the halves, more than likely at halfback but quite possibly at 5/8 depending on form/injuries of other players.

Morris, Witt & Marsh will fight it out for 2 starting spots in the halves. I think this is a good thing for all concerned. Competition brings the best out of everyone. Whoever is in the best form should start, simple as that.

I think after all PJ has been through and his time out of the game, he will be odds on to start the season on the bench in #14.

After PJ sorts his cobwebs out, gets some match-time, rebuilds his confidence and form, then anything could happen in combinations between these four players in the three starting positions. If Witt is going great guns after the first six weeks, then leave him in #7, and PJ can play #6, with say Morris in #9 and Riddell in second row, depending on injuries and form?

It is the best playmaking unit at Parra since 2001 easily...

I'm lost for words.

For once I agree with Phillips

Marsh will need to be eased back into the game.

Marsh is likely to play off the bench and possibly rotate with Riddell at dummy half. He's come back to Parramatta where he left off, an impact player of the bench. Mind you both Riddell and Marsh can be impact players. This is great news, another 2001 Eel back.

2001 eels returning in the last two years:

Grothe
McKinnon
Robinson
Marsh

I wonder he'll be next. :D

i bloody well agree with u avenger !

pj marsh is too good to have on the bench... in 2001 we had JT there who pushed him out coz of his experience and pinpoint kicking game.

u go with the better player, and no matter how much i love witt, marsh is a better player even at 70%.

imo witt is a bit overrated on this board, just like his brother steve witt who has done little at halfback for newcastle except average 3 mistackles per game. the dude is underdone, needs another year in PL, and needs to work on his defence, running game and final tackle option taking. he has potential though, massive potential.

If he is healthy he must start at half IMO. With the pack we have next year we desperately need a half who can take advantage of it and break a game wide open. IMO that's why PJ was signed, he has the running game.

I think Smithy needs to ease PJ back in. I think he'll start him off the bench but eventually he will start. And yes on paper we have the team next year to at least give it a real shake so no excuses next year if we don't make the 8 because even allowing for injuries we have the depth to be there. 8)
