Well one such Radio Station claims the reason is that it was tried some time in the 1980's and games were going for an extra 30 mins.

You'd absolutely b**ger the players if you didn't have those kind of stops in play. That'd be like an extra 20-30 minutes of non stop brutality. The ends of the game would become a bit of a lottery, whichever team still has their players running around at an acceptable and not life threatening heart rate. We have to take players health into consideration for something like that.

I think the held up rule is a great change and finally the defence gets some sort of recognition - The English have been using this rule for a few seasons now but they revert back to a srum where as the new NRL rule goes back to a play the ball.

On the time wasting I think it is needed but I also think that they should be given a time limit as to when the kick cannot be taken due to time wasting instead of the fine that clubs will be recieving.

On the coin toss I think that the winner of the coin toss should get the rights to not only choose the kick off duties but also choose the direction to which they should run not just one or the other

Why?

This rule change was instigated by a Roosters whingefest, and yet they were clearly trying to prevent the Warriors from having enough time to win their round 25 clash last year.

Stats from the game even prove the Roosters to be the biggest "time wasters" during the game.

Brent Webb took 7 shots at goal using up 616 seconds of game time for an average of 88 seconds.

Chris Walker took 5 shots at goal using up 448 seconds of game time for
an average of 89.6 seconds.

While Brad Fittler took 91 seconds for his lone shot at goal.

If you used their average kicking time of 89.83 seconds, then with one more kick they would have wasted 628.8 seconds as opossed to the Warriors 616 seconds.

Under the New NRL rules, Brent Webb's kicking wouldn't even have brought about a fine.

I have been watching rugby league for quite a while... but I'm not sure I see the rationale for the change to the coin toss rule??? I would be grateful if someone can explain why any change was needed at all, and what advantages the new rule has.

It seems to me that the coin toss change will mean that there will be no advantage to winning it.

Yeah like any team would choose to kick off apposed to what end to defend. I mean there's the wind, the sun and god knows what else that are more important to what end you defend, rather then kicking off or recieving the kick in the 1st minute of play

the point was made that at times a team may want to kick off to belt the oppersition in the 1st set to try and cause an error thereby getting the ball 20 metres out rather then 80.

However, if the team winning the toss decides to kick off, the other team gets to choose which end to defend, which would offset any advantage of kicking off....... so I'll be very surprised if anyone takes the option.
