NRL investigating Roosters over Lockyer

The National Rugby League is investigating whether the Sydney Roosters have breached the anti-tampering laws by holding contract discussions with the manager of Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer.

NRL chief executive David Gallop told The Daily Telegraph he would interview player manager George Mimis and Roosters management.

Gallop was reacting to suggestions Mimis had opened negotiations before the June 30 deadline.

Mimis and the Roosters strenuously deny speaking about the Brisbane star who is off contract at the end of the season.

If guilty, the Roosters could be fined up to $100,000.

"Players and agent may negotiate with the clubs's approval so we have asked the Broncos if they want to make a complaint," Gallop told the paper.

it was only a matter of time.

Wow, the NRL actually investigating the Roosters for once
I cant believe it

The perception of the Roosters according to most people I speak to is that they are over the salary cap and they blatantly flout the rules by continuing to try and pick up other players just because the NRL wont do anything about it

BTW I'm not saying the Roosters ARE above the cap, I'm saying everyone THINKS they are above the cap. And with an ex-Rooster in charge of the salary cap auditing, the plot thickens.

How could they possibly fit Lockyer under the cap?! Even with Fittler leaving (who they reckon was only on $300K) not including his bumper contract with Packer's Channel 9.

I can't see Lockyer leaving the broncs......and what the hell is going on with the roosters??
for years everyone whinged about the broncos and bulldogs being over the salary cap.......how are the roosters keeping under??

I used to like the roosters and hate the broncos....these days it has reversed.the roosters have become easily the most arrogant, self righteous team in the comp....

reason = gould and stuart...... I HATED stuart as aplayer and even more as a coach

I expect a big piece in the media about it on Monday morning from Gould saying how unfair everyone is to the goosters, how they are totally innocent of anything, and how much damage will be done to NRL by fining all of Sydneys most loved (!) team.
And a victory this weekend by us would only increase Gould's pleasure in the media.

I'm with the Roosters here (for once). Every club bends this rule.
Didn't Souths sign 3 players between 12.00am and 5.00am on July 1 last year(or some similar time frame).
As if the club will own up and the manager involved. Filling up paper space again.

I tend to agree with Foz on this matter. You can't tell me the clubs(all of them) are'nt trying to sign up quality,or for that matter, not so quality players for their roster next season and beyond. I would expect the sharkies to chase a player they feel they need if he was coming off contract, dog eat dog I say.

The Roosters have come out stating that they're not interested in Lockyer and that he won't be a Rooster next season.

Ha! Lets see if they stay true to their word.
