The NRL Expansion Project goes back to the inception of the NRL in 1998, where they had to start by rationalising the amount of clubs.

The two clubs which stand to lose the most as a result of further expansion are ironically the two JV clubs which helped kick off the rationalisation.

Both us (with Flanno in charge as head coach) and the Tigers (with Richo and their revamped board) might actually start to bring through some homegrown marquees in the next couple of years. How the hell are we going to feel if the likes of Hayden Buchanan, Pasifika-Tonga and King-Togia come up to grade, have a break-out 2027, only to then have the carrot dangled in front of them with the tax free PNG earnings (not necessarily for 2028 but for say 2029 or 2030)?

One thing that is undisputable - a lot of off contract players, and their managers, across the comp going forward won't be signing anywhere beyond 2027. How on earth are other clubs, particularly those who are looking to re-build and climb the ladder) supposed to build long term stability now?

I can't help but feel we and the Tigers (who still have great loyal fanbases and several sell out games per year despite poor results in the last decade plus) have been left out in the cold. Why is the heartland being ignored? Parramatta fans should also be worried (the news today easily puts them back another 10 years from breaking their premiership drought IF they are lucky).

I wouldn’t impose it on any new foreign countries.

I have an idea. Instead of a massively expensive, fumble-fingered flier into international diplomacy, let's just see if these drunken NRL clowns can at least just get referees to adjudIcate the play-the-ball according to the rule book.

Once they have shown they can do that, then maybe Vlandys can see about getting a place in the history books alongside Otto von Bismarck, the great unifier of Germany.

But my money is not on seeing fair and consistent application of the play-the-ball rules any time soon.

Yep. Tigers winning the spoon 3 times in a row (not expecting it to be 4 in a row) will be upstaged by the PNG team's 4 spoons in a row. Deadset, what a joke.

The money grabbing ARL and NRL, the greedy bastards more gambling ads to show to get their revenue.

They will need to bring in a Draft System, a yearly audited Salary Cap and TPA's.

The comp was better when we had 12 teams all playing against each other twice - home and away and top 4 for finals.

Not looking forward to the 20 team comp. Too many games and they will get boring as shit.

It's actually not a bad idea and money well spent given the conditions of the agreement. Sport is a good way to capture the hearts and minds of the PNG people - in this case their Number 1 sport. The Chinese govt would be fuming at Albo's big foot in the door. We should have made PNG a Territory after WWII but vision isn't something Aussie govts are known for.

PNG was part of Australia until 1975.

Not sure how the other 17 clubs will react to the tax incentives to attract players to play for PNG - I assume zero tax will payable by these players?

If Fred is offered 800 k by the Broncos which is roughly 470k after tax - PNG can offer 500k plus and trump any offer when no tax is payable plus one assumes no accommodation and meals etc costs involved.

Of course players will weigh up safety and security concerns especially if they have wife/gf/children and if their partner and or children can reside in PNG - Their Partners work and Kids schooling etc.

I read somewhere they could also be FIFO players similar to those that work in the mining industry for an example- not sure how that would work when training several times a week and the costs involved.

Nothing to do with that -even the PNG Prime Minister acknowledged that his goal is to make PNG a safer place - Players rightfully would have safety and security concerns not only just for themselves but any family they have who may also reside in PNG.

It’s a regular sight in Brisbane these days, but the Raskols couldn’t cop seeing that for very long.

I’m going to give the franchise maybe 5 or 6 years before the challenges eventually overrun it.

For the moment, it’s a massive overflowing trough for the snouts to feed in.

@This Year? can head up there as a fan consultant.

He shouldn’t bring his female friends as 1 in 3 women get assaulted or raped up there.

Our foreign service says it’s ‘ken dangerous, but ….Albo and Vlandys are cool with it.

We won’t be seeing them head up there until the nrl security compound is fully commissioned and deemed operational.

Stay overnight, open the first game and both of them hightail it in a convoy back to airforce one.

I would much rather had seen an Australian team such as the Central Coast or a rejuvenated North Sydney - even the good old Blue Bags of Newtown enter the competition - after all the NRL is supposedly a national brand .

Nevertheless I do wish the Kumas good fortune and I hope that they are not just another novelty that wears off after a period of time .

If the game ties its scheduling and ratings to a png prescence it’s pretty much putting a lot of power into the hands of its government and corporate rulers of the day.

And regrettably it’s legal system remains pretty risky and underdeveloped.

The average wage in png is $300 a week and most people earn a lot less.

Looking at the exchange rate, the travel, food and accommodation for their gallant Australian sojourns is going to cost them 250% more than for Australian based clubs. That’s on absolutely everything.

So unless they want their charge their fans the Aussie equivalent of $300 or so to watch a game, their only survival solution will be to keep bleeding the nrl and our government.

And hand on heart, we know they won’t be looking after their fans. We can’t even manage that ourselves!

Our nrl clubs are the laziest, greediest and most entitled organisations in the sporting world. Mostly run by people with mates who couldn’t get a job anywhere else.
