They are getting the best deal they can. They are the sport, at nrl level. They put their bodies and long term health on the line to bring in the nrls money. Good luck to them I say, get what you can.
The way they are negotiating is dishonest

they are treating fans as mugs

they agreed on a headline figure then went back and told the nrl there were a whole load of extra on top of that

at one stage they wanted a player on the commission

I’m all for rugby league players making as much as possible but they are delaying more important issues like expansion and growth of the game which ultimately means more money for players

these are the guys who go out on the piss and grab girls on the bum or so many many things to tarnish the games image

vlandys has raised the salary cap a lot, brought in a new team and got the game started again during covid

the players owe him a lot and are acting like he’s been cheating them

The NRL linked the 2 by setting a limit to what they would pay above what the players contribute. So even if the players came to an agreement that they'd contribute 200k per team, the agreement with the NRL now says they get commercial rights for free. It'd make no sense for the players to agree to it.

It's pure greed and scummy behaviour from the NRL.
the commercial rights was for 1.6 mill. they get that no matter what. it is on the players to fund the rlpa properly not the nrl

the problem I have is it appears the players are happy to value their players union when it is paid for by the NRL.

I wonder how much the top players would value the Union if it was voluntary and paid for as a percentage of all players salaries, similar to taxes.

Players are consistently ripping the sport off of further opportunities to develop and grow the game both at home and abroad.

Rewriting history. The players actually had a trade union, a proper union, the NRL got them to disband the union, which offered certain abilities to act and that was so the NRL had an easier way forward. Now they are at the wim of the NRL providing money to fund those activities which just means the NRL can cut them off at the knees.

As for the things they are asking, given they are stakeholders who put their bodies on the line, they should have a say on things like number of games they are expected to play etc. Even if the voice isn't listened, it would allow them to provide the dissenting opinion.

I wouldn't trust the NRL to provide the best workplace and if you have actually read the RLPA website you would understand what they are asking for and why.

I can’t see players striking with the competition so close, it’d bugger up momentum of teams, and if they do strike, can the QLD/NSW Cup players step up to play NRL?

I suspect many of those players would be in the RLPA so I doubt they'd accept a call up somehow.

Union fees are tax deductible. Have been for decades.

They do

Its called the Annual Report that all companies must undertake for ATO reasons

There is a link to its summary, and there will be a supporting full financial report available as required by the ATO
Except Vlandys has buried pretty much any detail of revenue in the annual report bar the bottom line. After the NRL tried to rip the players off a significant amount of funding by misrepresenting revenue I dont blame the lack of trust they have.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, and all that.

The international game won't be able to grow unless both the NRL and the ESL competitions are reduced in length. Regardless of what people think, the human body needs time to rest and recover, so adding more and more games will not improve the quality. It will do the reverse and lilely to see an increase in injuries or burn out to your elite players.

As such I think the RLA have a point on this.

In relatiopn to the RLPA funding, from some reason the NRL provides the funding direct to them. Every other Union I know of, members pay their fees direct to the Union itself or (in rarer occasions now via payroll deduction). It is not funded by the employer. FYI - A lot of unions abandoned pay roll deductions after a number of Governments ended payroll deductions of union fees without telling the effected staff, nor the Unions (it was to try and make themn insolvent).

I did the sums earlier in this thread.

There is no way the game can have more games. As for less games. Most players play 24, Some could play 34 but they want money so it won't get reduced

Luke Keary:

"It's the RLPA doing their job and the NRL doing their job," Keary said.
"It's the RLPA's job to fight for our rights, protect us into the future, protect the income, protect the players and how many games they're playing, things like that.
"But you can take yourself out of it and go, 'Well what's the NRL's job?'.
"Their job is to run the game, keep it viable, keep it sustainable into the future.
"But it's not going to stop the RLPA from trying to protect the players' rights.

"We see it all the time with unions, there's always going to be a bit of pushback and there should be. Because if there's no pushback, someone's getting pushed over."
Keary pushed back against suggestion from Stuart last week that "95 per cent of players" would not know why the media blackout has been enacted.
"Communication has been really effective from the RLPA and the delegates," Keary said.
"The RLPA are constantly out, coming here (at Roosters headquarters) to feed that information back, they were here a couple of weeks ago.
"It's kind of an invalid argument.
"With every union, there's going to be guys that are not interested, don't care, just get on with it and that's fine. As a young player, I was exactly the same.
"But there are boys that are invested at the top and they're the ones that we're leaning on for the information and the guidance."

An historic NRLW season launch celebrating a brand new 10 team competition is now highly unlikely to go ahead in Sydney next week.
It’s understood a venue had been booked in Barangaroo for the event on Tuesday, which was due to be attended by NRLW captains, senior players and dozens of junior rugby league players and fans.

It was set to be a special event to launch a newly expanded 10-team competition, which grew from six teams in 2022 and is less than two weeks away from kick-off.

Those plans are now in extreme doubt with no iron-clad guarantee players would attend, or not cancel at the last minute, given the latest stand off between the union and the NRL.

Running the event as planned would come at a big financial risk to the NRL.

It follows the abandonment of the NRL season launch earlier this year, and the withdrawal of players on the morning of the launch of Multicultural Round.

There was also no event for the announcement of the NRLW draw when it was released back in April.

And now, doubt over the NRLW season launch is the latest twist in a bitter fight between players and the governing body.

It reached new lows last week, with the union responding by issuing a blanket media ban for all players on any day games are being played.

The RLPA deny any knowledge of the scheduled NRLW event next week, although all clubs were briefed by the NRL at the end of June with players requested to attend.

“As of this afternoon we haven’t received any communication from the NRL regarding the NRLW launch,” said RLPA boss Clint Newton.

“If the launch falls on a Tuesday then based on the boundaries the players have set, there should be no issue with it going ahead.”

However, it appears doomed.

In that case you are going to wind up with something that has crept into the NBA - load management. That's where players do not play every game of the season so as to ensure players are "niggle" free injury wise and do not burn out in the regular season.

So Keary is saying what the players are asking may be unaffordable and it’s up to the arlc to look after the games interest

somehow that’s not strengthing their argument lmao

27 teams ?? Last time I counted there were only 17 teams in the NRL as rep football and state leagues arnt covered

Yes 27. Women deserve the same rights and representation. NRLW players have been members of the RLPA since 2016.

This is a personal crusade by Newton - PVL and AA do not stand to gain anything financially - they are just trying to do the right thing by the game, long term, whilst giving the players a better deal than ever before.
Newton and some senior RLPA members are however pushing agendas for their own personal gain.
PVL attempting to get the senior players and a different NRL executive around the table is of course a good option - but Newton of course doesn’t want his nose out of joint.
The NRL need to play hardball - put a deadline on them, take it or leave it, give them a ‘fire and re-hire’ ultimatum - if they don’t agree to the new proposed CBA, go down the fire-re-hire route which would include scrapping the RLPA funding, scrap the ‘partners in the game/profit sharing’ concept and just agree a basic salary cap number (at the same values being offered). I guarantee over 95% would still stick around for the ‘re-hire’ option - where else can they all make the same money, doing something they love?
