when 95% of the current cap (and soon to be $11m) has to be spent and you look at clubs at the bottom of the table, you have to ask if the money is well spent. No wonder so many clubs have substandard rosters

That’s good, hopefully they will also not only replace the $25mill they took out of grass roots last year but increase that as well.

If the nrl goes to 18 teams then the cap will go up above this. This is just based on the current tv deals and money the arlc is bringing in

They should allow the cap to roll over, and change it so that teams have to spend 95% of total cap over any 3 period.

You get the same result, under the current system, with an 11m cap, over any three year period a club would spend a minimum of $31,350,000 (3x $10,450,000m)

By allowing them to spend under the cap and rolling it over, they'll still need to spend $31,350,000 over any three year period, so the player base doesnt lose a cent, but they can build cap to take big swings at the top talent

It'd never get through though, because it's pretty much going to take money out of the middle and lower class players and put it more in the hands of the stars... however it would dramatically help with parity and talent distribution. The system now doesnt allow enough wriggle room for clubs to pull themselves out of the gutter.

They either have to do what penrith did, and strike oil with a group of incredible juniors, or do what the dogs/knights have done, and pay huge overs for someone like Burton and hope he's a generational player who can drag them into a better situation.

The balance sits somehwere between the two I reckon. Extra cap for players that come from u18 in your system and a marquee allowance to sign one big name per club. Have a base cap of $10mill plus $500k extra for players from own system and $500k for a marquee signing.

Remember the days when Union and League players got paid the same, if not more for Union players?

The salary cap for Super Rugby is $5.5M with the NRL about to have double that with (soon to be) 3.5X as many teams.

unless you are going to be a Wallaby or an All Black you would be a fool to play super rugby over NRL

Exactly, unless you're a generational talent in Rugby that would go straight into the Wallabies from high school, you'd have to be a complete moron not to choose the NRL.

Probably why Nudgee College, easily the best Rugby school in Queensland maybe even Australia is full of players choosing League. Their 1st XV that will easily win the comp this year had something like 11 players that tried out for League rep sides.

So we see a 10% jump in one year

Not as high as the 28% jump for 7 to 9 mil

But still too high

NRL should be doing the increase by the same amount each season eg 300k unless we are increasing the player pool to cover a NRL RG and NRLW team

Depends on your position, a winger or forward can earn a lot more in France or Japanese union than the nrl generally. Halfback, centre or fullback, for sure nrl is where the money is.

No problem with players earning big, they deliver the product at end of day. Just as long as it doesn’t chew up all the nrls money so we fail to invest properly in grassroots, asset base, promotion, growth etc.

it’d be good to see the nrl support the state bodies to develop increased revenue generation of their own as one strategic goal.

game has had a sht load of money since it went independent yet we seem to have very little to show for it.

The issue is not what a player earns

But the removal of the salary cap limiting effect triggering player movements from club 1 to club 2 between year 1 to year 2 when there is too large a jump

900k is a 10% jump then we go back to 1% the following year

Business heavily supports Rugby to the point that when a player finishes playing...

Problem is the nrl is getting all the good union juniors as kids with contracts super rugby can’t match so they never get a chance to develop into elite union players
