NRL to launch crackdown on play the balls

It should be easy to police if the marker is not allowed to have any contact with the man playing the ball

Agreed. This is what pisses me off about coaches whinging about the refs performance at the end of the game. The refs job would be a darn sight easier and they would do a much better job if the coaches weren't constantly looking at ways to make their job harder.
We would not have to have refs watching the ruck with a hawk eye if coaches were not such cheating cants.
While the refs are watching to see if Cam is playing the ball properly, misses a prop off side everyone is on the refs back.

The world club challenge, is that played under NRL rules?

That will be interesting to watch lol.

14 Penalties in the Knights/Melbourne trial apparently, just for playing the ball wrong.

f**kin great first 5 rounds of whistle ball coming up if thats the case.

The refs will give up on it before players change their ways and all it'll do is piss fans off who don't wanna see tons of penalties and kicks at goal. Not to mention the inconsistencies around some players being held to a higher standard of PTB than others and each ref having a different opinion of what constitutes a good enough attempt at playing the ball with their foot seeing as the rule completely discretionary.

I agree regarding referees inconsistent rulings, which is partly due to the rule wording.

I don’t agree with people complaining when they penalise an infringement.

Provided the refs are consistent you will find the players will be specifically prompted by the coaches to play the ball correctly. If not they are certain to lose the game. That will create good play the balls and clear the ruck leading to more entertaining footy!

2 refs in 1 game and a discretionary rule; you will never achieve consistency across 80 minutes, let alone a weekend or a season.

Again though, if there is inconsistency in the refereeing on account of this crack down blame the coaches. They are the ones coaching the players to play the ball a certain way in breach of the rules making the refs life hard. Why can't the coaches get together and go "hey lets try to win a legitimate way without trying to breach the rules". Do the coaches in cricket coach bowlers to bowl no balls? The coaches need to stop their obsession with cheating.

I don't know what the coach did to you, but I hope you're getting help to move on and know it wasn't your fault.

Every ref should be consistent with this fundamental rule. Sure maybe the odd one missed. But in the main it should be ruled on! If the refs police it pretty soon the players will not breach the rules as the coaches will demand so!

But it is not a black and white rule so it is left to the discretion of the individual viewing the incident, of which there are 2 in each match, or 16 across a round.

I randomly picked Cowboys v Broncos from round 26 and there were 71 sets of 6 in that match, so about 426 play the balls. Find 16 individuals who'd form the same opinion on all 426 from just one match.

The refs will ease off their crackdown after 5-8 weeks naturally, or they'll be forced to back off when penalty counts are blowing out.

A concerted and dedicated effort will reap positive results! This time it's important. It matters to the end product! The powers that be have finally realised this.

Who cares if the foot touches it or not? So long as there is some sort of action with the foot it should be regarded as an attempt. If its a tunnelball then it should be penalised

Put the blame where it lies. If the players and coaches do the right thing, there'll be minimal penalties.

Players and coaches will do whatever they see fit to win a premiership, that is why we have officials. If everyone run out and adhered completely to the rules there would be no need for refs.

And yet, we can still put the blame where it lies.

Slippery slope that leads us to end looking like union. It’s not hard, it’s not a difficult skill, just play it with your foot!

I thought about explaining this to him but didn't want to feed the troll.
