Newcastle, Parramatta and Gold Coast will enter the NRL Telstra Women's Premiership in 2021 following confirmation the competition will expand to six teams for the upcoming season.

The NRL announced the changes on Friday with a five-round and finals series scheduled to begin in August and run in line with the men's NRL Telstra Premiership from round 23.

It is the first time expansion has occurred in the NRLW since its arrival in 2018 with the confirmation offering clarity for players leading into Ampol Women's State of Origin after months of speculation.

"Women's rugby league is the fastest-growing part of our sport and it's exciting to be in a position to expand the competition after the success of the last three seasons," NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said.

"The NRLW competition has produced some of the best athletes in Australia, it's captivated a new fanbase and today's expansion will give more players the opportunity to play in an elite competition."

The new NRLW clubs will join inaugural teams, three-time champions Brisbane, St George Illawarra and the Sydney Roosters.

The Warriors, who rallied to field a team last season despite the implications of COVID-19, have pulled out of the competition after three years of involvement.

It is hoped they can return in 2022, where the NRL hopes to further expand to eight NRLW teams.

"The Warriors were part of the first four clubs to join the NRLW competition and we are grateful for the commitment they made right from the start, particularly during the pandemic last year," Abdo said.

"It's been an incredibly challenging period for the club during COVID and I'm confident we will see the Warriors return to the competition in 2022 as part of our expansion plans."

The new-look competition is expected to include talent equalisation across all 24-player squads, enabling new clubs to be able to recruit top-tier players in the game despite their current allegiances.

That predicament may not bode well for the Broncos, who have the Titans to fend off as they look to keep their premiership-winning side together.

The Titans have reportedly been linked to former Roosters NRLW coach Jamie Feeney to help get the franchise up and running.

Feeney's involvement with the Titans is a wise investment after he turned the Roosters from cellar dwellers into grand finalists and also for his general knowledge of the women's game.

Newcastle are expected to be coached by retired Knights playmaker Blake Green, who has previously worked with the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns.

Parramatta Eels Join NRLW Competition

The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce that the Club will be joining the NRLW competition in 2021.

This is an exciting and historic moment for the Club as it embarks on a new era with its first elite women’s team.

Parramatta Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos said, “We have one of the largest female supporter bases in the NRL, and we want to ensure the Club represents the diversity of its members and fans by providing a platform to inspire young girls to feel connected with the Club.

“We identified a NRLW team as a priority to ensure that our development club philosophy could be extended to our female pathways players. We want to inspire all females to play rugby league, and we can now give them the opportunity play at an elite level in a national competition.

“Our Club is committed to developing an elite women’s program that rivals any sport in Western Sydney,” said Jim.

Parramatta has appointed former Parramatta Eels player Dean Widders as the inaugural Head Coach of its NRLW team.

“I am delighted that we are able to welcome Dean back to the Club, and with his recent experience as head coach of the South Sydney women’s team, he will bring a strong knowledge of the women’s game to our program.”

Andy Patmore has been appointed as NRLW Manager. Andy has a strong track record in the game, both as an NRL player, and manager and coach of the men’s and women’s pathways at Canterbury.

Andy also coached the Women’s NSW State of Origin team in 2019 and 2020 and has a strong connection with the women’s game at the elite level.

“Dean and Andy will be great leaders for our NRLW program and will be assembling a team of coaching and support staff over the coming weeks,” added Jim.

The Club is currently working through recruiting the squad of 24 players who will commence pre-season training on July 12. To ensure the team has the best possible facilities, they will be training at the NSW Rugby League Centre of Excellence as well as the Club’s Kellyville Park training facility.

Scheduled for completion by late 2023, stages 2 and 3 of the Eels development project at Kellyville Park will deliver the only precinct in the NRL with dedicated high performance and match day facilities for NRLW and Elite women’s programs.

This season’s NRLW competition kicks off in late August, co-inciding with Round 23 of the NRL competition, with the regular season comprising of five home-and-away rounds, with the finals series culminating in the Grand Final to be held on 3 October.

The $50 debut membership is ok if you cant get to the games.

That cap is considerably better than the current PE CAP IMO TBH...
plus the key ring looks good, not cheap plastic, not that that bothered me but it did quite a few others

hey have recruited some pretty damn good WNRL players
Well to be fair, they are creating a pool of players and allocating them across all teams. Aim is to ensure that the mini comp is competitive.

Soz, it’s being temperamental.

Big congratulations to Emily Curtain who has had one successful journey in her footy career so far 🤩
Curtain has played for the Wests Tigers and progressed through the Tarsha Gale Cup, the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership, represented NSW in 2019 in the U18s Women's State of Origin and has now signed with the Parramatta Eels in the NRLW 💯
