NRLW - 2024

Re first play Eels/Dragons -

Eels player ran the ball back from the kick-off. Was held up and shoved about 10 metres to the side-line. The relevant clause in the rulebook is -

"Moving Tackle Player: Where opponents do not make a tackle effective in the quickest possible manner but attempt to push, pull or carry the player in possession, it is permissible for colleagues of the tackled player to lend their weight in order to avoid losing ground. Immediately this happens the referee should call Held"

An Eels teammate did make a half-hearted effort to get involved. I reckon the ref should have called Held. Tricky judgement though because the ball-carrier, despite heading towards the side-line, still had forward momentum.

The WNRL have butchered things a bit by expanding too quickly this year. They really need to halt expansion for a long time yet to see an improvement in quality.

Thats an opinion which is fine, but its not my opinion. No one is going to be as good as everyone else and as the numbers increase you will get a bigger gap. But as seasons get longer teams also get better look at St George.

Still unclear to what "quality" refers.

If it means the games, when one team has too much "quality" for their opposition the outcome can sometimes be a blowout. Alternatively, when two teams are perfectly well-matched in "quality" the outcome can sometimes be risk-averse tedium.

My take is that all NRLW games are enjoyable for fans so long as officials stop looking for things to call and let the players get on with it.

Juxtaposing negative views on the current 10-team comp with previous unflattering commentary about the 4-team comp would likely reveal multiple and reciprocal contradictions. Some people will always find fault.

Anything Gould says should be ignored, if its vaguely right then there is generally some other motive or he didn't mean it.. I can't believe he is allowed to commentate with his Bulldog affiliation.
Fair dinkum, Gus is a Marmite (Vegemite) character. The good moments make him worthwhile. Case in point, the Simaima Taufa fandom on Sunday. Genuine enthusiasm for a player he respects.

No, he is nothing more than a parrot when it comes to the female game. I love and respect Simaima as a player and person, but he just sprouts things he has heard or been "advised" rather than having any clue about the female game

Notwithstanding a wish to see Hollie-Mae Dodd succeed, I'm pleased Canberra are losing games. Their non-PTBs are an absolute disgrace. This must be coached, virtually the whole team are rolling the ball through their legs. How bad does it have to get before the refs do something?

I'm not retracting my comment about Gus and his "good moments". A general RL pundit alongside Ruan or Allana is a reasonable balance. However -

Sweet Lord! his bad moments test the patience. During the second half of Roosters/Raiders he spent 10 minutes babbling on about the men's round with Tommo while the game was in progress. Awkward for Ruan, trying to coax them into calling the game without appearing rude.

Rude awakening for Sharks in Round 7. The 6-0 record was a false position anyway. Certainly premiership contenders, but I reckon Roosters, Broncos, Knights are all stronger squads. Broncos v Sharks next week will tell us a lot about the Sharks prospects.

Of the 2 teams just outside the top 4, Eels look more likely than Cowboys to sneak into 4th. Their 1st-round win over Broncos looks ever more valuable. Decisive test coming up for Cowboys in Gosford.

On the broadcast front, this Maroon bloke is hopeless. NRLW deserves better. Get rid.

I suspect, with every respect to the commentators who've been doing the games the past month or so, that Ch9 have been using whoever was left after their main ones were off doing the Olympics and Paralympics gigs in Paris lately. That's all done with now.

Belinda Sharp pulled up Roosters forward Eliza Lopamaua on Sunday for an incorrect PTB. The player stumbled over the ball in a genuine attempt to play it legally. Meanwhile, other players are allowed to deliberately walk over the ball without making the slightest attempt to play it with the foot.

Graphically illustrates the iniquity of selective enforcement. Those who abide by the rules suffer, those who flout the rules prosper.

That sums up the only reason Brisbane won the first couple of comps. Blatantly ignored the rules and started training months prior to other teams.

Also sort of sums up RL at many levels

Fine player. I began following women's RL in 2017. Searched online for Aussie game footage. Found Jillaroos Tests and State Challenges from around 2013-17. Karina Brown was a standout. Reminded me a bit of DWZ.

Speaks well in interviews. Potential media pundit. Although sometimes hard to divine what the qualifications are from Nine and Fox NRLW coverage.
