Maddinson out as NSW name squad
Dashing batsman released as Blues announce youthful 24-man playing group

Hard-hitting batsman Nic Maddinson’s career in the sky blue of NSW has come to an end after Cricket NSW today announced its men’s contract list for season 2018-19 without the left-hander.

Maddinson, who made his Test debut against South Africa in November 2016 and played two further Tests, is now without a state contract for next summer, but will represent the Melbourne Stars in the KFC Big Bash League.

The 26-year-old played seven JLT Sheffield Shield matches last summer, averaging 23.61 with a high score of 87, his only half-century in the four-day format.

"We have made the tough decision to release Nic Maddinson," said Cricket NSW General Manager of Cricket Performance David Moore.

"Nic is a mercurial talent who has played Test cricket but he lacked consistency for the Blues at Sheffield Shield level, averaging under 33 across the past eight seasons.

"NSW is an ‘up or out’ system and we now need to give new players their opportunity. We wish Nic well in the future and hope he achieves his potential in the game."

Maddinson is one of five Blues players to not be re-contracted, joing wicketkeeper Jay Lenton, fast bowler Gurinder Sandhu (moved to Tasmania) and retired veterans Ed Cowan and Doug Bollinger.

Replacing that group is an exciting quintet of young players, led by Australia Under-19 captain Jason Sangha, who is joined by Param Uppal, Dan Fallins, Mickey Edwards and Liam Hatcher.

"We choose players based on both performance and potential and all of the latest additions have shown signs of what they are capable of at the next level," Moore said.

"Param, Mickey and Dan all made their debuts for the Blues last season while Jason made a first-class century against England during a tour match in Townsville last November and Liam has previously represented the Cricket Australia XI in the state one-day competition."

Four players – Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon – were awarded Cricket Australia contracts. Due to their suspensions for their involvement in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal, Steve Smith and David Warner are ineligible to represent their country or state for 12 months.

While the Blues have finalised their squad for the upcoming season, Moore Park is still without a head coach after Trent Johnston departed the post at the end of the summer.

The Blues finished in fifth place in the Sheffield Shield last summer and fourth in the JLT One-Day Cup competition.

NSW Blues contracted players for 2018-19: Mitchell Starc (CA), Pat Cummins (CA), Josh Hazlewood (CA), Nathan Lyon (CA). Ryan Gibson, Moises Henriques, Dan Hughes, Nick Larkin, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Param Uppal, Peter Nevill, Dan Fallin, Arjun Nair, Steve O’Keefe, Will Somerville, Sean Abbott, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Ben Dwarshius, Mickey Edwards, Liam Hatcher, Charlie Stobo, Henry Thornton. Rookies: Jack Edwards, Jordan Gauci, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley, Baxter Holt, Chad Sammut

The rug retired and Sandu gone to Tassie, hope we can develop some decent bowlers as its been our weakness imo. We rely heavily on Copeland but if the pitch is flat he doesn't penetrate at his pace.

Interesting to see how the newbies go.

Hardly unfair. He's got talent coming out of his ears but never delivered.

I'd be a bit surprised if another state didn't take a punt.

I agree he is talented, got the physical attributes and I've seen him play some brilliant innings but he is one of those blokes he just has way too many brain explosions with his get out shots

if he doesn't get picked up by another state he is still young enough to fight his way back

The New South Wales Blues continue to promote exciting young players, naming three potential debutants for the opening JLT Sheffield Shield match of the season against South Australia, beginning next Tuesday.

Recent JLT One-Day Cup star Jack Edwards, Australia’s Under 19 captain Jason Sangha and well performed allrounder Daniel Sams are part of a 12-man squad which leaves for Adelaide on Monday.

Edwards and Sams both performed with distinction throughout the recent JLT One-Day Cup. Edwards was the leading run-scorer for the Blues with 273 runs at an average of 54.6, while Sams claimed nine wickets at 22.4 and made 152 runs at just under 40.

Eighteen-year-old Edwards became the youngest batsman to ever score a century in one-day domestic cricket in Australia when he posted 116 against Queensland at Drummoyne Oval during the tournament.

Sangha has started his season in good form. He made his first half-century of the McDonald’s NSW Premier Cricket with 67 not out against UNSW last Saturday.

The 19-year-old also posted a solid 48 for ACT/NSW Country against Queensland this week in the Toyota Futures League at Canberra's Manuka Oval.

Sangha became the second youngest player in history to score a first class century against England behind Indian great Sachin Tendulkar last season.

Aged 18 years and 68 days, Sangha scored 133 for a Cricket Australia XI against England in a drawn four-day match at Townsville during November.

After several years plying his trade in NSW Premier Cricket and, more recently, in the Big Bash League, Sams said he shared the same excitement as Edwards about a possible Shield debut on Tuesday.

“Really excited to potentially wear the Baggy Blue. (It’s) been a goal for me for quite a while now,” said the 25-year-old.

Edwards said his performances throughout the JLT One-Day Cup has given him the confidence he can compete at the domestic level.

“I think you get a taste of (what to expect from) the different sides and how they go about things and how they are going to bowl at you.

“White ball cricket you can go after it a bit more, but red ball I might have to bat a bit more time.”

Sams concurred. “One of the biggest things with Shield cricket, obviously being a longer form, you’ve just got to try and execute your skills for a longer period of time.

“If you’re bowling, trying to outlast the batter and try and draw a mistake.”

Edwards has again been selected alongside his brother, fast bowler Mickey Edwards, in the squad for the first round of the Shield.

“Made my debut in white ball cricket with him, and hopefully we’ll do the same in red ball,” he said.
