NSW centre Josh Dugan is under strict medical advice from St George-Illawarra to sit out all contact drills until 24 hours before State of Origin I as he recovers from a fractured cheekbone suffered in last month’s Anzac Test.
The revelation will have a major impact on the Blues’ preparations ahead of Wednesday week’s game at Suncorp Stadium.
The Daily Telegraph has learned that as a result of conversations with Dragons medical staff prior to Dugan’s selection on Monday night, the NSWRL will need to consider eliminating the Blues strike weapon’s involvement in all contact sessions once he enters camp in Kingscliff on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Dragons, Dugan’s first contact and tackling assessment will need to be at the Blues captain’s run next Tuesday.
Despite the Dragons medical staff diagnosis, Dugan has told NSWRL officials that he feels he will be fit and confident to be involved in contact sessions by Friday and possibly, as early as Thursday.
Blues coach Laurie Daley is aware of the expert advice and won’t risk Dugan, who he views as a proven game-breaker, if he’s considered anything less than a 100 per cent.
Daley failed to name a shadow centre for Dugan upon announcing his squad at The Star on Monday night, but did select Matt Moylan on an extended bench, suggesting a possible reshuffle should the Dragons fullback be deemed too great a risk.
By Origin I, it will have been 26 days since he suffered the injury while playing for the Kangaroos against the Kiwis in Canberra.
It was during the second half that Dugan collided in a sickening head clash with St George-Illawarra teammate and New Zealand prop Russell Packer.
Dragons officials will monitor the Blues’ handling of Dugan, given coach Paul McGregor expects his star fullback to line up for the club in their round 13 clash with the Wests Tigers on June 3, three days after Origin I.
Physically, Dugan has lost nothing in his conditioning with the cheekbone injury having no impact on his ability to continue his agility, speed and ball work.
However, given he will only have the captain’s run to test his cheekbone, his greatest challenge could be his mental aspect going into an Origin game.
Having signed a $3 million deal to join Cronulla last Saturday, Dugan will enter camp with his future secured, yet his immediate playing future, teste
