THE NEWS JUST SAID JACK BIRD WILL PLAY HOOKER FOR PART OF THE GAME ON WEDNESDAY. Loz is a mong.
It said he trained there because Peats is carrying an injury.
Don't let me stop the good story though
He was talking about playing in the position himself? It seems pretty much a done deal.
you don't expect a specialist utility to spend some time coming out of dummy half? especially with a intensive defensive 9 like peats who's known to need a shift at 70 minutes?
the bigger story here is why the f**k bird hasn't already trained there given the impact he makes. peachey the other utility option plays 9 regularly as required
He's 21.....Several years away but young Brailey looks like the guy who will play 10 years in a blues jersey. Everyone else is just minding it for him.
Amazing temperament for an 18 yo.
He was definitely 18 three years ago, though. He's 21.....
Bird's the right side player on the bench. When Graham comes on I think Jackson shifts to the middle or comes off.
it would be negligent of Daley not to go into the match without a contingency at #9. It's Peats' first origin match, hookers defend in the middle.third, and the intensity will be like nothing he's had to deal with at club level. There may very well be a period towards the end of the first half, or mid-second half where Peats could use a breather. Furthermore, if the worst were to happen and he cops an injury and can't complete the game, NSW will need someone to slot in. In both cases, using a player who has already taken reps at training to develop familiarity with the forwards and halves is a smart move.
Thing with Bird too is it won't necessarily be a wasted interchange because he can stay on the field and fill in on the right-side for Jackson if Peats comes back on. And as right centre is his main position at Cronulla, he will also cover the most injury prone player NSW have got.
It really is no different to what Morgan will be doing with QLD.
The problem with NSW that I see is squad balance. There are only two recognised players on the bench to fill in the middle rotation - JTrob and Klemmer. With Bird already in the squad and tasked with the important duty of covering #9 and other positions, Graham is really a wasted selection......unless Daley sees his value in the middle too. Not sure he's spent much time for Cronulla there. For me Graham starts or doesn't make it. Sure he seems like a better player than others who may get the gig, but he stars as a left-side forward, a position that players generally play 80'.
That's what NSW have done.....that's why they haven't got a specialist centre and they picked Pearce, and they picked Graham. In contrast, Walters has selected based on position when you consider they left Slater out, and he selected Milford to start because he's predominantly a left side player (where Thurston plays for NQ, QLD & Aus) whereas Morgan is right side (where Cronk plays for Melbourne, QLD & Aus).
Friz plays on the right for St George btw. Even though he's been given the No.13 jersey, the talk is he'll be moved onto the right to target Milford, and Jackson will be starting in the middle. IMO, it means they'll be playing one man down in the middle with the ball because Jackson has no impact in that role whatsoever. Will tackle his heart out though. In addition to giving Graham the role there too, NSW might lose their supposed trench superiority if they play two predominantly edge forwards in the middle rotation.
with Graham, it's more about how he'll be used. Last thing NSW need is another purposeless 10 minute cameo at the end.I dont agree. If we are leaving out the best players just because they dont conform to the correct "side" of the field then that is plain stupid
