Interesting they've boxed Luke Kelly at 7. He's played at 6 for us and I think that really is his spot. Will do well at seven as he has a great kicking and passing game, but the extra bit of width helps him.

They just know he wouldn't stand a chance v Gernhoefer ;-)

pfft. I won't make any comment about Gernhoefer as I'm sure he's a talent, but Kelly is a SPECIAL talent. The kid has vision far beyond what good 17 year old can expect. Some are great athletes, but Luke is a footballer.

The reason I think he's so much more suited to 6 than 7 is just that vision and football brain. He just makes his outside backs look so good. His specialty is to have his outside men running flat at the line and putting the ball on the chest of the one running into the hole. Add the kicking game and his elusive (not to mention quick) running and you have a pretty complete package. He's only small so in defence he can be targetted, but he has plenty of guts and isn't afraid to take on the big guys. Best 5/8 I think we've had at the club since? Would not look out of place at all in this company.

Only 4 Panthers and we won the f**kin comp...what a joke.
How many players do Penrith have in their u/18's SG ball side that are eligible to play under 17's?

Name recognition is a powerful thing.
I don't know if you've ever seen Mitchell Pearce play Yappy but while he's not at the Matt Rogers level yet, he sure aint no Lincoln Raudonikous.

He was an Australian schoolboy at 16 and from watching him play in Dubbo last week at the NSW catholic Colleges trials I doubt his name had much to do with that.

While I am a very big fan of young Luke Kelly I don't think that casting aspersions on other players is going to help his cause any.

Remember too that this is Luke's first year down in the big smoke and to be picked to trial for this side is a pretty good indication of what is to come for him.

He will give a good account of himself and I just hope that they will pick the best player on the night.

Mate, there is no way that I'm casting aspersions on Pearce. He can sure play. Merely pointing out that if his name was Mitchell Bloggs no where near as many people would be jumping out of their skin to nominate him as the next A Johns and saying other players need not bother turning up. If Luke Kelly was Luke Langer then those same folks would be hailing him from the rooftops. Both have been selected here on merit. The No.7 in the final side is nothing like a foregone conclusion. Kelly (for a guy in his first year in the big smoke as you rightly point out) is right in the frame, and that is in what I still contend is not his best position. I reckon a Pearce/Kelly combo would be close to the best 7/6 selection that could be chosen out of those selected, but of course others might have other opinions.

3 out of 4 is not a bad effort all the same, especially as it was a pretty tight comp all round.
At Wests we got 2 out of 10 and I was suprised Cassiano Aiga, Nathan Fiti and Byron Fruen didn't get a look in.

I heard it was played informally (eg no coversion attempts taken). Score was roughly 4 tries each. I don't know the standouts but i think they name the team on Monday.

I think Mitch Pearce is a certainty for the side. He played PL today against Norths and he didn't look out of place at all.

Not many players who are Under-17 play PL. He is the only one from the lists above.

true...but I would have expected 2 or 3 of the Harold Matthews lads to get a call up ahead a few on that list.

I don't think they have named any under-16s for this game.

They will get an opportunity next year.
