With the countdown to the Rugby League World Cup well and truly on, Western Sydney will get an early taste of international action tomorrow when the New South Wales Rugby League International 9’s tournament kicks-off at Cabramatta.
The International 9’s features 16 sides, with Cook Islands, American Samoa, World Cup-bound Fiji, Portugal, Australian Indigenous, Japan and the Pacific Islands taking on NSWRL foundation clubs Balmain Tigers, Wests Magpies and Newtown Jets, together with Jim Beam Cup and NSW Cup outfits Windsor Wolves, Mounties, Campbelltown Eagles, Shellharbour and the Cabramatta Two-Blues.
This year’s teams feature several current and former first-grade players such as former Rothmans Medal Winner Leo Denover (Indigenous), Newcastle Knights’ Wes Naiqama (Fiji), former Eel Ronald Prince (Indigenous), and current Wests Tigers players Shannon Gallant and Trent Cutler (Wests).
The Tournament, which takes over from the World Sevens Wildcard Tournament that has been held at St Mary’s Leagues for the past five years, has received the backing of some of Sydney’s larger businesses, with Sydney UD Trucks, Canterbury, Schweppes, Tooheys and Cabramatta Leagues all contributing to the $12,000 prize pool.
Off the field, there will also be plenty of action with Parramattastars Krisnan Inu, Matt Keating and Chris Keating, together with a few Wests Tigers and a few Penrith Panthers players signing autographs between 4pm and 5pm.
