The Chiefs and Highlanders have been the big draft/transfer market movers, the Blues have steadfastly stuck to their (pop)guns and the Crusaders and Hurricanes have unveiled what appear to be New Zealand's outstanding squads based strongly on their successful provincial heavyweights.

That's the upshot of today's announcement of New Zealand's five Super 14 lineups for 2009, which in turn was the outcome of a frantic day of horse-trading from the five coaches at NZRU headquarters.
It's hard to shake the feeling, too, that the more things change the more they stay the same.
As usual, the defending champion Crusaders have come up with a cast-iron lineup consisting almost exclusively of talent from within the region, with one or two recently imported additions. Todd Blackadder has dipped into the draft for just one player - backup hooker Jason Macdonald of Otago - and has 22 Cantabs in his squad, including Wellington flanker Thomas Waldrom and Northland fullback Jared Payne who have both made the move south.
There is, of course, no Dan Carter in the Crusaders next year, but in Stephen Brett and Colin Slade they have more than adequate stand-ins. There are also seven touring All Blacks as well as the sidelined Leon MacDonald, and former international Casey Laulala in the squad.
If anything Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper has announced a squad even stronger than the Crusaders, certainly on the depth front.
Like Blackadder, Cooper has seen fit to draft just one player - impressive Southland midfielder Jason Kawau - and has plucked the best from the three well-performed unions in his region. Naturally, Air NZ Cup runnersup Wellington dominate the selection with 19 players, three coming from Hawke's Bay (though they have five more scattered around via the draft), four from Taranaki and flanker Josh Bradnock from Manawatu.
With the Canes, it was more about who they left out, with both the Chiefs and Highlanders greedily helping themselves to leftovers from the region.
Cooper appears to have assembled an outstanding squad, with 10 touring All Blacks and a good mix of experienced old heads and new up-and-comers, including a half-dozen who have yet to taste rugby at this level.
Most importantly the Canes squad is deep, with Cooper seeming to have plenty of options in all positions, with the loose forward contingent, midfield and back three all looking like they will be highly competitive.
Blues coach Pat Lam has pretty much shrugged off the poor form of his three feeder provinces and backed himself to get the best out of talent that badly under-performed in the Air NZ Cup.
Lam has drafted just one player from outside the region - young Wellington inside back Michael Hobbs - and has stuck largely with the players from within the region who failed to fire at Air NZ Cup time.
Lam has 19 Aucklanders, six North Harbour players and just two from Northland in his squad, though to be fair the Auckland contingent includes big-name transfers Ali Williams, Paul Williams, Tasesa Lavea and Josh Blackie, as well as All Blacks John Afoa, Keven Mealamu, Jerome Kaino and Joe Rokocoko who were available only sparingly in this year's campaign.
Northland veteran Justin Collins has been persuaded to front for one more campaign, while his provincial team-mate Rene Ranger is the only other from kauri country to make the Blues.
There are 11 first-time Blues and six players named in a Super 14 squad for the first time, but Lam is confident he has the makings of a competitive squad, despite the poor form of his feeder unions.
"Over the years Air NZ Cup or NPC form hasn't necessarily translated into what's happened in the Super 14," said Lam.
"The key thing here is we have 28 talented individuals and their challenge is to come together as a team. We're really passionate and excited about going out there and making it happen. We're not looking to hide from the facts, our aim is to win the Super 14."
Chiefs coach Ian Foster will have his work cut out getting his side into title contention in 2009, with 12 newcomers to the franchise, five draft players and six Super 14 rookies in his squad which has a distinctly new look about it.
The Chiefs have snaffled outstanding Hawke's Bay hooker Hika Elliot via the draft, though he's by no means their only classy pickup. Taranaki lock Craig Clarke and Wellington openside Serge Lilo should contend for starting spots, while Otago halfback Toby Morland and Southland first five/fullback James Wilson are capable backups.
They have also snared highly promising Hawke's Bay prop Arizona Taumalolo who has come in via one of those confusing transfer and loan back arrangements.
Foster admitted the Chiefs would have their work cut out coming together quickly, especially with so much experience lost in his tight five. They have three newcomers at prop and two in the second row, and forwards coach Craig Stevenson is going to have his work cut out forging a competitive pack.
"There is a challenge in the coming months to get this new group working together and working hard to get the results we need in this area," said Foster.
Highlanders coach Glenn Moore has predictably leant heavily on the Hawke's Bay influence of his new assistant Peter Russell, bringing in George Naoupu, Matt Berquist, Jason Shoemark and Israel Dagg from the Magpies via the draft, along with Clint Newland who was already secured via a transfer deal.
Wellington prop Anthony Perenise is the fifth draft player, though Hayden Tiggs (Manawatu), Jayden Hayward (Taranaki), Johnny Leota (Manawatu) and Fetu'u Vainikolo (Northland) have all been transferred into the region.
The well-performed Southland Stags have eight players in the Highlanders squad (plus another two scattered round in the draft) and Otago 15 (including the four transferred men).
The Highlanders look solid up front and at halfback, though will have their work cut out coming up with a backline capable of getting the job done at this level. Dagg is an excellent pickup and may solve the side's problems at fullback, but they still look shy of genuine quality on one wing, at centre and in the playmaking roles.
All told 30 players have been selected in a Super 14 squad for the first time and 13 have been drafted to other franchises.
Nine players return to the 2009 Super 14 after not being selected for the 2008 competition due to availability, injury or form.
Five sets of brothers will play in Super 14 New Zealand teams. They are: Jacob and Tamati Ellison, Ben and Owen Franks, Scott and Thomas Waldrom, Adam and George Whitelock, Ali and Jay Williams.

The Hurricanes have a strong forward pack with the likes of Tialata, Hore, Eaton, Thrush and Waldrom.

The backs are strong but may lack direction if Weepu or Nonu are missing..will be interetsing to see how Guildford goes...a great talent.

Fmd. I've never heard of at least half these players. It's alarming the amount of new comers in these squads. What's more alarming is the sh*tload of established players that must have left for these blokes to get a run!

Oh, and Solomon King from BOP should have been in 1 of these squads.

Lavea is going to be running the Blues with Gopperth as back up. Might as well put a line through the Blues for 2009. Shame they couldn't hold onto Evans or McCalister, Nacewa would even be better than Lavea.

very solid squads, considering the player drain after the WC JB, no established players have been left out (well none that the average guy off the street can recall) but some players to miss out that are very unlucky, from southland Pehi te Whare and Saunders off the top of my head,

but my predictions about each team

Best NZ S14 team

1. Crusaders- Won the NPC this year, and didn't have their All Blacks, altho same can be said with Hurricanes, I just have a feeling they will crack under pressure which was evident in NPC this year.

weaknessess-
wingers- Kade Poki and Sean Maitland, very young and not established wingers, crusaders should have picked up a decent winger in the draft,
Number 8- Thomas Waldron and Nasi Manu- both have very limited s14 experience Thomas has always been behind Rodney at the Hurricanes and will take 2 years at S14 to become established, Nasi Manu is very young as well, and altho more than capable is a project for the future.
-NUmber 12- Tim Bateman is a quality player, however his new, and size isn't on his side, his more a srcum half or number 10, but no1 would want to be a number 10 in christchurhc looking for a S14 contract. may play colin slade at 10 and brett at 12.
Strengths
- Second Row, Isaac Ross, Ross Filipo, Brad Thorn, Michael Patterson, all capable of playing for the All Blacks and will have one of the strongest second rows in the comp in terms of depth, Altho not one of them is the premier lock in the comp altho Thorn would go close to it, if one goes down theres no stressing about who to put on.
Loosies- George Whitelock, keep an eye out for him in the future, hes a great number 7 prospect, hes got mungrel, height, and hes getting training with McCaaw, he played well in NPC this year and will have a great future, Him along with Richie and Kieran Read, all are quality loosies.
Number 10-
funny that when Carter leaves the Crusaders stil have excellent prospects at 10, Stephen brett- well a source in Christchurch told me the only reason he didn't get all blacks call up was coz he is apparantely very arrogant and needs some years to get his feet on the ground, hes an excellent talent will go far, and Colin Slade- like an Andrew Mehrtens in his prime that can tackle and get tackled great future, altho i cant see it at Crusaders behind Carter and Brett -both are still young.

2 best NZ s14 team

Hurricanes

Weaknesses- NOt many, one of the strongest squads in S14 next year- both quality and depth.
- Number 10
They have depth at this position no problems, but the quality they have is questionable, whether they play Piri there (out of position and not where he is an All Black) and Alby (injury away from being an All Black) or Piri at 9 and Willie Ripira who is very new to S14. Dan Kirkpatrick is an excellent talent who will fill that 10 jersey but being in competition with Ripira in 2-3 years, soon the number 10 wont be an issue.
Strengths- Everywhere except the number 10 basically, in terms of depth and quality, its just a matter of the coach getting them to play as a team and not individuals which i can see happening, if they play as a team (like the crusaders do very well despite not having the best line-up) they will kill the competition.

3rd best

Chiefs- Developing team, expecialy in tight 5, dont expect them to make finals,
Weaknesses-
FR- They have young exciting talent who are new to this level, usually you want these guys as your reserves, but for the chiefs who lost all their experienced players OS, they are forced to play them as their starting team, They will struggle in scrums and tight five initially, but get better as the comp goes on. However their starting FR will be competitive 1.Ben May (very good player in a bad NPC team) 2. Hika Elliot (all Black) 3. Aled (gets better every year) if one of these gets injured then its any1's guess if they will remain competitive, their back-ups are good at NPC level but at S14 level they r untested and not really sure how they will go.
SR- keith Robinson has a tough job getting this SR up to a competitive S14 level, Kevin O'Neil (ppl say hes over-rated), Toby Lynn, never really cemented his spot in S14, Craig Clarke- he doesn't really transfer his NPC form to S14 form (tends to not get as involved, looks scared) and Mark Burman (i'd never heard of him before) with a starting 4. O'Neil 5. Lynn with Clarke reserve their lineout wont be the best.

Strengths
- Loose forewards and Number 8
More than capable of matching it with the cursaders and hurricanes, quality and depth is evident with players such as Liam Messam (all black), Latimer (should be all black in few years) Serge Lilo (same as Latimer) Sione Lauaki (well we know what he can do) and Colin Bourke (had a great NPC) its hard who to start, altho i think it will be 6. messam 7. latimer 8. Sione With Bourke on reserves due to flexibility, this is same combo as last year and will benefit from consistancy and experience.
Backline- One of the best NZ backlines, if the forewards can mix it with the best then these guys will destroy the competition. Esepcially their back three 11. siti 14. sonseni 15. Mills again same as last year and all All Blacks and their experience together has increased, also with Donald making All Blacks this year his game will improve immensly and you'll see a better functioning backline with 12. Bruce (junior All Black) and 13. Kahui (All Black) and reserves such as Jackson Willison (NZ u'20 world cup player), Lelia Masaga (awesome winger, should be and All Black, just needs to get out of Counties), James Wilson (great prospect), Mike Delany (capable back up to Donald) their depth is great as well.

4th

Blues
Why Lam hasn't used to draft i'll never know, lets face it Northland, Auckland, North Harbour all played sh!t this year, and why you would pick only 1 player in the draft when none of these teams made the top 8, i'll never know. anyway..

Weaknesses
- Front row depth
Charlie Faumina and Tevita are very new to the game- wouldn't make the starting line-up of Auckland if it wasn't for the All Blacks missing, so why Lam showed faith in them i'll never know. in a few years they would be up for a S14 contract but not now, no way
- Number 6- with Kaino probabll playing 8, Justin Collins will play 6, while hes a good player, alota respect for him, he should be OS making the money, hes at that stage where hes done all he could in NZ rugby and should set new goals, his heart wont be in it, and he wont perform well.
-Number 9, 10, 12
9. Taniela Moa (with Lam there, should be Smylie (but because hes not from Auckalnd i'll be very suprised if he starts) this guy will be one of those 'good club players' dont think he will make it far in rugby in NZ,
10. Tasea Lavea, while very capable of being a good rugby player, he just seems to do stupid things and if Lam can get that out of his game he will be good, but icant see it happening, hes just done it way to often. With Jimmy Gopperth behind him, there wont be a problem with depth, just quality, as both these players are average players in NZ.
12. Benson Stanley- needs a few more years till i can get confident in him, good prospect, was talk of him going to QLD, would be bad to lose him. The depth is a problem with Michael Hobbs (untested at this level, didn't start often at NPC level with Wellington) i feel a bit of strings have been pulled as his father is the greeat Jock Hobbs.

Strengths

- Strong FR, while the depth is a problem the starting front row wil be very competitive, Woodcock, Mealamu, Afoa - all blacks, will be strange to see these guys dominated in a scrum.
- Strong SR- Ali Williams, Anthong Boric all blacks, will mix it with the best in the line-outs, their depth isn't bad either with Kurtis Haiu (great NPC season) and Jay Williams (ali's yougner bro)
_Outside Backs, 13. Anthony Tuitavaki, 11. Joe 14. Rudi 15. Isia, awesome players all Allblacks be great to see these guys play chiefs backline in a game of touch. Paul Williams, Rene Ranger unlucky to be behind these guys both quality players shows the depth the blues will have.

Worst NZ team, but not the worst in S14

Highlanders- this is a work in progress, i wont expect them to go far, but if they go better than the blues or chiefs, they should be very happy with the coaching staff and the players development.

weaknesses
- Hookers
David Hall and Jason Rutledge are two great NPC players, whether they can transfer this to the field is a different question. both played for Southland and hall player number 8 at some points, but because of this their development will be hampered a bit, as both have reduced game time in S14 level and NPC level in number 2 spot.
Number 10- Daniel Bowden and Matt berquist- Daniel hasn't produced what his capable of at NPC level and it lucky to get a S14 contract, Matt Berquist played great for Hawkes Bay and is untested at this level however if he can transfer this to S14 he will start ahead of Daniel.

Strengths-
Props- With the same props as last year (had a great yr last yr) and one now an All Black their props will continue to improve and thus their scrum will too.
Number 6 + 7- Adam Thompson will continue to improve and will be one to watch in next yr's comp, a sevens player he's a loosie that likes to run, which is what the ELV's is designed to produce. Tim Boys and Alando are players on the rise, while not the best in the comp, u can bet each week they will give 100% and will continue to improve tough to sort out who will start but i reckon it will be Boys.
Centres- this may be a bit of a gamble, but if NPC form is anything to go by, then they should be well convered in centers, producing quality as well. Johnny Leota (played for them last year), Kendrick Lynn (great southland centre), Jaydney Hayward (rookie of the year in NPC) Jason Shoemark (great centre, dogged by injury) with a starting consisting of Johnny and Jason they wont struggle for good perfomances and will have the depth to back it up.
- good winger and fullback- one wing is covered and so too fullback, altho they wont be the best compared to other teams their NPC form is up there with the best. Fetu'u Vainokolo was so good on attack last year but his defense was criticised, i'm sure they will work on that this year and his game will improve, Israel Dagg- if u looked at his previous experienced, 21 years old, all NZ age grade reps, won u'20 world cup, starting full back for Hawkes Bay, made NPC semi finals, you can see he's deserved a contract and he'll start (unless somethings wrong with Moore) and hopefully have a good season, the other winger Lucky Mulipola has got talent no doubt, but off field dramas, injury have hampered that and he didn't have a good NPC seasons and was lucky to get a S14 contract, usually he performs above what ppl expect in S14 and i'm sure he will do that this year.

I'm 90% happy with the squads, you can see that theres baised towards the selection, especially with the blues (with Pat lam, former coach of Auckland NPC, picking msot his players from the blues, depsite Northalnd finishing above them and not using the draft apart from Jack Hobbs) there are players very lucky to make it, and players who are gutted not too, some include Glen Horton, Matt Saunders, Solomon King, Pehi Te Whare, all should have got a contract, and if dont make it to extended training squad, should go play OS.

However for most of the players who are new in the squad, its about transfering their NPC form to the S14 competition, they were picked on that form and are more than capable of delevering, as they are professionals, they played against others who play in the s14 each week and i'm sure being in a professional environment surrounded by good players will help along with the coaches, plus once they get used to the games they will imporve. 60-70% of new players will transfer their form to S14 level, and i'm sure their will be a few suprises (highlanders is my pick). enjoy.

I think the Hurricanes will win it this year, they've been teetering around the top finish for a while now.

60-70% of new players will transfer their form to S14 level, and i'm sure their will be a few suprises (highlanders is my pick). enjoy.
How on earth can you say that Taniela Moa is a weakness for the Blues ? He is arguably one of the best halfbacks in NZ and to say that Smylie is better tells me that you are either North Harbour biased or you are related to the guy.

chris smyle won NPC player of the year few years back, and has had an unfortunate run last few years, personal reasons, injury prevented him from getting far, plus he was behind piri weepu and jimmy cowan, but alot of talent there and hes getting back on track.

Taniela Moa is no where near the best half back in the country, he'd be behind Weepu, Cowan, Leonard, Ellis, Mathewson at least but i hope he proves me wrong.
the reason why i say he may be a weakness, is coz this is his first year as a starting half-back (more than likely) he was back-up to Danny Lee last year and he's still very young, alot of potential, but has an tendency to do dumb things if he stops doing that then he will be a very good half-back in the s14, i'm not doubting his potential, he just needs experience.

Yeh i am Nth Harbour, but i've taken a liking to Otago (coz a relative plays for them)

I'm surprised Kawau wasn't picked up by the Highlanders. He's probably the best midfield back in the Highlanders region.

yeh i can c why he got picked up by hurricanes, the highlanders draftede Jayden Hayward from Taranaki (a guy with huge potential, highly rated in NZ rugby) and Jason Shoemark is a good player but the reason highlanders got him is their assistant coach is coach of Hawkes Bay, so bit of influence there, but Kawau would be better than all these centres atm, he was a Maori Rep last year does seem a bit odd, b4 the squads were picked Kawau said himself he thought he was going to the blues. they and Johnny Leota would have been the centers protected in the squad of 24 (had they protected 3 centres) and if no other s14 team picked him up in the draft he would start for highlanders or go close to it
