I’m not against another Brisbane side per se but how quickly are you putting in them? I wouldn’t want another side there for another decade. Seriously, I’d be worried about taking away supporters from Titans or Dolphins.

PNG is just a non starter. You surely can’t argue on the one hand against AFL wasting money on expansion then propose PNG? You do realise that if the government pull funding from something (remember this week?) NRL are left holding the can on that one and the amount of money they would have to spend to make PNG work would dwarf what AFL have spent. There is no revenue in PNG and I mean no revenue. Nada. Zilch. An area has got to be at least somewhat self-sufficient to work.

Perth and NZ are the only options if we’re being at all serious.
Depends on when team 18 comes in doesn’t it. 3 to 5 years after them.

png is a potential game changer for rugby league and the nrl. Even if the nrl has to tip in an extra 15 million pa out of their own funds I would back it to the hilt.

it’s not just for player production and crowds, it’s also benefitting international rugby league so there’s a flow back there in better tv deals and sponsorship for international rl

the arlc hasn’t even begun to monetise the value of international rl

they should be aiming to supplant the bledisloe. Plus develop the pacific nations to the hilt

that’s where the nrl needs to focus not so much on trying to be like afl

Mate if somebody came to you and said let’s invest in this area but there is no money flowing back and it requires a big capital outlay, would you do it. Take the emotion out of it and think logically.

Most people in the PNG are earning a wage in which you couldn’t survive on in Australia. They probably enjoy their lives all the same (especially without the keeping up the Jones’ mentality and the associated stress) but you have to think about how it would work when they are competing with the financial might of the Australian clubs. How are people going to attend games over there for example if people over here are paying $50 or more to attend a game? Or financially back this club in other ways? How are they recruiting players if players aren’t even willing to go to NZ? How are they keeping players? That is not even touching on the stupidity of having a team representing one area but basing them somewhere else. You wouldn’t consider a team representing say Adelaide but basing them in Sydney would you?
That’s all not a criticism of that country of it’s people but it is what it is. Until they become a developed country, it shouldn’t be even discussed.

Perth is the only viable option on the table if NRL wants to expand in next 3-5 years. Of course they could decide to wait 7-8 and then bring in Brisbane 3, that wouldn't surprise me at all given how the NRL operates. The next tv deal hasn't brought in enough cash to bring in club 18 before 2028 and is barely covering the Dolphins admission.

Only way PNG works is if NRL does a 180 degree U turn in its thinking and funds clubs like AFL does. If NRL was happy to chuck $25mill plus a year at them forever it might eventually work. But they wont so it aint ever going to happen.

Png it’s about juniors and international rugby league

The payback will be from tv rights for internationals and a much larger player pool

You can still have all these things without actually putting a side there.

For example, you don’t see Major League Baseball putting sides in Latin America/Cuba for the same reason: those areas don’t have the economics/infrastructure to compete with American baseball clubs, even more so when their currencies are compared to the American dollar. Yet despite all of that, they still have a lot of players from those areas playing in the Major League.

The same thing here, you can’t have a team from a developing country in the same competition as developed countries, playing week in and week out. There is a reason why it hasn’t been done: It just wouldn’t work

Never mind it’s too off topic now

Has the mlb put a team in another country ?

cause the nrl has and it worked

like I said the nrl and the bud can sort out the economics

Yes in Canada. Toronto Blue Jays. The same with the NBA. Toronto Raptors

With those cases, as well as the NZ Warriors, you are adding a team from another country that has the same economic profile. USA- Canada and Australia-NZ are all developed countries.

Name me an example where a competition in a developed country admit a side from a developing country or vice versa.

1. What options are there besides NZ 2 (not in Auckland) and Perth and maybe down the track Adelaide that actually ‘grows’ the sport. Every other option you can think is either not financially viable or is cannibalising your market. You can’t grow the sport by putting teams in areas where you already have teams. That makes no sense.

2. That is a pretty ridiculous statement up there with something Pippen or some other person who hasn’t escaped the NSWRL days. Putting in a team representing a market of 5 million people that is well supported (up there with the Broncos) hasn’t increased our TV deals much? Take them out and put in another Sydney team in and see what would happen.
Didn't the 2020 NRL GF between Storm and Panthers draw twice as many viewers in Melbourne than Brisbane?

That doesn't happen without the Storm's introduction in 1998. On-field success has definitely played a large role, but there's no denying they've added fans from a market that wasn't watching the game 25 years ago.

The only options left for future teams are Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane 3, New Zealand 2, New Zealand 3 and SE Asia. People laugh at the suggestion of SE Asia having a team, but they said Melbourne Storm would fall over in 1998 and thought the Central Coast Bears were a fait accompli to get the 16th licence, so I don't take notice of what they say.

I cannot see RL mad PNG successfully hosting a team when only one-third of its population has access to electricity and the GDP is too low for most of its people to financially invest in an NRL club. There's no way the NRL will pay Papuans living below the poverty line to attend matches at the National Football Stadium, which can only support about 15k-20k people.

No one would relocate their family to Port Moresby because it is one of the most dangerous places to live. If the Warriors and Titans struggle to recruit players away from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney then how will a team based in Port Moresby do it?

Aussie don’t acknowledge them much but the founders of rugby league were as much kiwis as Aussies

early nz Māori tours to nsw stopped the nswrl from going broke

indeed the very rules of rugby league came from the English watching the running rugby of the 1905 all blacks and changing the rules of our game from union to league

if nz gets developed properly kiwis vs Roos tests matches could be bigger than origin

already the kiwis have loads of ex players in Tonga and Samoa and they still have a great side
All Blacks have won 1 of their last 6 matches. Would be amazing timing for the Kiwis to win a World Cup and God forbid the Warriors to get their shit together

RU is at a low ebb right now in NZ - not just because the All Blacks are at a real low, but Super Rugby has real problems getting competitive teams from Australia & the Pacific to front against the NZ sides, and the removal of big forwards-dominated South African teams from Super Rugby has weakened the competition too.

Kiwis are dependent on whose fit at season end. They have no depth in key positions. If they can get the best 17 out they've got a good chance, if any of the key backs go down there's not much behind them.
Personally I'm hoping for an England v Tonga final that is as good as the last semi they played!

The kiwis depth in the spine has never been better. All this behind a world class forward pack

1. Manu, CNK, Issako
6. Brown, Foran, Martin, Manu
7. Hughes, Johnson, CHT, Nikorima
9. Smith, JMK, Clark

How do you feel about the England team? Hoping for another big world cup from them.

The game needs a solid 8 competitive teams Aus, NZ, Eng, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, PNG and then France... then we need to bring to Wales their full potential to make 9

I believe a Tonga V England final is impossible. They are one one side of the likely finals draw with Samoa & PNG. Aus, NZ, Fiji, Lebanon etc on the other side.

Other than fullback that depth is ok.
