CHANNEL 9 commentator Andrew Voss obviously thinks he's becoming bigger than the game. At halftime in last Wednesday's Origin match Voss was waiting in the tunnel for the players to return to the field when he decided to impart the benefit of his vast knowledge of the rules to the match referees, who were also in the tunnel at the time. According to bystanders, he let the referees know that in his opinion they got the David Williams eight-point try wrong because the errant Johnathan Thurston boot made contact after the try had been scored. Not only was Voss lucky not to be the subject of an official complaint from the referees for using his privileged access to criticise them, but he was also factually wrong in his assessment of what took place. Replays show very clearly Williams was still in the process of grounding the ball when kicked - exactly what the rule is intended to prevent.
Don't be surprised if the NRL lodges an official complaint with Channel Nine boss David Gyngell over the incident.
