Saints Trap The Lyon - Newsteam @ 12:30 GMT
St Helens have stunned the rugby league world by successfully pulling off one of the biggest signings in the Clubs history. Jamie Lyon, the 22 year-old Australian international centre, has signed a two year deal with the Saints starting next season.
Lyon gained full international honours for the Kangaroos at the age of 19 and played in a Grand Final for Parramatta at 19 also. He is considered by many to be the best strike centre in the world. He has not played for Parramatta Eeels this year after rethinking his rugby career and every big club in Australia and England has been pursuing him.
St Helens Chairman Eamonn McManus stated "We may have recently sold the best centre in England, but I feel that we have replaced him with the best in the world in Jamie Lyon. Jamie is also a fine young man and will undoubtedly be a fine role model for our young supporters. I believe that we have both strengthened the squad for next year and conducted an excellent piece of business. This is a great vote of confidence for the Saints as well as for Super League."
Ian Millward, Saints coach stated: "This is the biggest signing for St Helens since Mal Meninga. Jamie is already a world class strike centre and can only improve. This is a huge boost for the Club and a clear sign of its intentions to remain the most successful rugby league club in Britain."
Jamie Lyon added: "I am raring to play for the Saints, particularly as I will be linking up with Darren Albert, the quickest winger in the British game. St Helens impressed me by their clear ambition to remain a leading world rugby force and they stood out from all the Clubs which showed interest in me, even in Australia."
