Student complaint over footy rampage
February 22, 2005

A 19-year-old female university student today made a formal complaint to police over an indecent assault following a drunken rampage by Newcastle Knights rugby players.

NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Dave Madden said the woman had provided police with a formal statement, alleging she was indecently assaulted by a man in the early hours of Sunday morning in a dormitory at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

"She has provided a formal statement but she is considering her position in terms of future proceedings," Mr Madden said today.

"Despite that, we are continuing with an investigation."

Mr Madden said a strike force had been formed to investigate the allegations.

The Newcastle NRL club has sacked one player and issued fines totalling $50,000 against 12 players over the rampage last weekend at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

The Knights terminated 20-year-old Dane Tilse's contract for conduct "contrary and prejudicial to the club and the NRL".

Tilse has apologised for his part in the drunken rampage.

Mr Madden acknowledged the club's apology and action by the NRL against the Knights players.

"Already we have seen the Newcastle Knights club apologise to the community for the behaviour at the university on that night," he said.

"Equally the NRL has already imposed a fine on the Newcastle Knights."

Terrific...just what my game needs....the individuals who pulled this stunt have tarred the supporters and players of the NRL with the same brush yet again! Disgraceful. I don't care if they forked out 6 figures for players...Newcastle should supsend the players involved for the first few rounds of the season!

*edit - not entirely true*, let off fire extinguishers and generally behaved in a thoroughly stupid manner. Furthermore, when security came, they ran away. None of these things are intelligent things to do.

Well the NRL did the right thing by fining them and also imposing a suspended penalty...whats good for one club should go for all other 14 teams!

Well, personally, I think that the *edit* and the *edit* can *edit* with *edit* and then *edit* after *edit*, that is, if they haven't already *edit*. But then again, *edit* *edit* first. Therefore, *edit*.

(P.S. Mods, don't go crook. Lame attempt at humour)

i agree dakink. then it would be like the players would be scared of letting the whole team down, so they wouldnt act like total morons.

"She has provided a formal statement but she is considering her position in terms of future proceedings," Mr Madden said today.

so this basically means she wont be pressing charges. actually if i was this girl i wouldnt bother with the whole thing. and thats a scary thought. but she is gonna get dragged through so much, her name will be muddied by everyone and she will be no doubt accused of being a s**t or 'wanting it' like the girl in coffs. which is terrible because this means players can do whatever they want and their victims are too scared to fully press charges because of the ordeal. it sucks

The girl is completely innocent and no comparisons should be drawn to other cases, especially not last year.

It's a sad reality that some girls will be put off reporting incidents where they have been mistreated. It would be wrong to assume that is the case in this instance, given that we've only heard media reports of a loose lipped gossip's version of events.

None of the allegations we heard came from the person directly involved. The media's handling of this has again been shabby at best and they are to blame for the girl coming under such intense scrutiny.

I hope she has decided not to proceed because she believes that is the right thing to do, not because she believes it is the best thing for her to do.
