You guys all ought to wake up. The ARU is trying with all their effort to KILL OUR GAME. WAKE UP FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!!!! Be glad that the Wallabies (I refuse to call them Australia as they represent a small mob of upper crust gits) lost tonight. I am. The establishment are well behind the Wallabies and they are desperate to wipe us out. Just see how they got behind the garbage tournament that has just taken place. No doubt it was a great final and semi, but 2 good games out of 48 is not a great outcome. I can't stand the ARU types. The loss to the Wallabies is right up the nose of John O'Neill and all his mates. It means nothing to ordinary Australians. That's my opinion.

The ARU have the money and the media hype, but they don't have the product. Nor do they have any kind of regional fanbase to seriously challenge League on the domestic level for quite a while.

Remember, sports these days are driven by one thing -- TV ratings. League has been rating through the roof the last couple of years, while Union has been the absolute pits TV-wise. Their biggest domestic-like comp is the Super 12, and that has awful ratings. Do you think a truly domestic Union comp would rate better than that? Nope, club will always rate worse than state level.

Union is not a sport for the spectators, period. They're already hailing tonight's WC final as "a game for the ages" and the best Union game they'd ever see -- are they serious? That's as good as it gets??? The scoreline was great (extra time, etc), but the actual game itself was very mediocre. Monotonous, unskilled, constant stoppages for long periods, a kick-fest...

And that was the best out of 48 games in the WC. All but maybe 4-5 of the 48 games were well below mediocre. That's not a good strike rate.

ARU poaching our elite players may be a threat, but we'll see how that plays out. It's hardly going to convince kids to take up Union, is it? If all their Wallabies were players who became known as League players, and then poached -- well, why not do as they did and play League first? You see, it actually works against them in the long run. They would be giving League exposure as a great breeding ground for players. Their poaching of Sailor, Tuquiri and Rogers hasn't hurt League, but it has made Union lose credibility by not being able to supply their own talent, and relying on League's image for their own profile.

It will certainly be an interesting couple of years -- if anything big is going to happen (e.g. a Super-League like takeover by ARU), it will happen now.

But let's be serious. When it's League season, everything is League and Union barely gets a mention (even Super 12). We're only noticing this ARU presence now because a) it's the off-season, and the Kangaroo Tour has been so under-hyped it's not known about, and b) The World Cup is on in Australia. That doesn't mean the NRL should ignore any threat (quite the opposite, they should be more proactive), but there's no need to panic.

Remember when the Bunnies were kicked out, and hundreds of thousands of people marched to get them back in? You don't think the same thing will happen if other clubs, or League entirely, faced extinction? We might lose a couple of players like Wing (which would be a shame), or Kimmorley (no great loss), or even Johns (he's on the downward slide now anyway, the slower pace of Union and not having to run at all would suit him better), but we won't lose our game -- because it's THAT GOOD.

Don't forget -- we just had one of our best ever seasons, and Jesus it was great!

Thats the most sense I've read for some time. Rugby League is a domestic game for the domestic family. Its game adored by many in the bush and the city and it walks all over Union on the domestic level including super 12.

The only time union walks over league is on the International stage during June and July. But in those months the greatest specticle of them all State Of Origin is on and that takes the pain out of their minor success.

Rugby Union will never take over League in any form or vice versa.

Lets just get on with the game, watch our Rugby League and be content knowing we have the toughest, greatest and best football code in the world to watch in our own backyard and not give a hoot about what union does.

See if we keep doing this the ARU are going to say they have a minor victory as avid league fans are arguing over their game. The best form of arguing is slience. So lets do this, the less said about union on these forums the better. Lets only hear how we can make RUGBY LEAGUE a better game in Australia :)

wrong ...

I suppose Brad Mackay is a by product of the WARL too?!

Shannon was born and raised in north queensland, and was a Mackay junior. He joined the Western Reds after being scouted by Steve Rogers.

no a fair few western australians have made the roos in the past
Name two ....or one, even

I dont theres been any that have played for the Roos.

I can tell you Matt Petersen is only WA player in the NRL so far

Quote:
whilst the melbourne storm are also represented

Name one born and bred melbourne junior who has played for the storm

Jake Webster played for the Storm this year, hes a victorian junior.

It would be silly to ignore the threat the rugby union is posing to our game. They are serious in aiming to taking over in Australia as premier rugby code. Pretending it won't happen because of a smug focus on suburban teams in Sydney (that are going to ultimately fail like South Sydney) will lead inevitably to just that result for the sport as a whole.

People ought to understand that this is now an all out war between the codes and we have just had a big setback despite the actual quality of the rugby union assault.... it is not going to be perceived like that.... unfortunately..... Giving them any free kicks from rugby league personalities is just silly......
