Oldest Debutant forced into retirement

Hey folks.

As some of you know one of our posters here "oldest debutant" is one of the Newtown Junior Jets B Grade side. Some of you will also know he is my Dad.

Last weekend playing in a tough game against Matraville Tigers Dad was involved in a tackle where the man came down the wrong way and injured his neck. He was imobile on the field for some time and was transfered by ambulance to St George Hospital.

After days of waiting and several tests its been revealed he has damaged his back and will require surgery, ending his footballing journey.

Now many people have had a laugh at his expense, a 53 year old coming out of a 30 year retirement, but none can laugh at his commitment. He is down at every training session he can get to and hasn't missed a game. He has put his body on the line against bigger and more skillful oponnents and done the Jets proud.

Unfortunately he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on Sunday. Remember blokes like Nathan Brown and Gordon Tallis have succumbed to the same situation so there is no shame in what happened.

He'll probably have the sh*ts at me posting this, but hey, deal with it! :)

I'm lucky to say, along with my brother, I got to play footy with my dad. Not many folks can make that claim and on many an occassion we packed down with him and my brother in the front row, myself at hooker. You'd have to look long and hard through the record books to find that.

Whilst Dad won't be able to play a farewell match we will be organising something in the next few weeks to say thank you for his efforts. He may not have scored many points, maybe he missed a tackle here and there (even I'VE done that!) but at the end of the day, when you have to cut the jersey off a man's back to get him out of it, you know hes done his job.

When the time comes we will all get together and have a beer and all here will be welcome to join the celebrations.

Good on you Dad, thanks for what you've done.

Hope the old man is alright Brendo.

So now the question is, where does the next front rower come from? Possibly someone who has recorded a shorter timeframe in retirement?

Do you have to live within the Newtown area or even the area of the competition to play for the Jets?

Thanks Brendo, I'm very grateful for the post.

It's hard to express what it's been like playing again after so long, and even harder to expres the feelings of being able to kit up with your adult sons. Packing down in the front row of a scrum with both sons is a memory not easily forgotten, especially considering some of the behemoths we played against. The photo on the top of my bookcase will serve as a reminder of what a sensational time it was.

For reasons best left out of this post, my sons have not always enjoyed the best of me, and in many ways missed out. Playing with the Jets and them gave me an opportunity to share with them something that few fathers get to do. Even if I knew the outcome, I'd do it all again in an instant.

It was a great honour and a privilege to wear the Jets' jumper, and a wonderful experience that it could be shared with the boys. It was also amazing to have my mother, daughter, and granddaughter at a game; a first for all of them. Again, the photos will keep those memories very much alive.

I wish the Jets well for the rest of the year, although fielding a side is going to get tougher as the season progresses.

Thanks Brendo. For being as passionate a Jets' man as you are, and for being a great son. I'm a very lucky man to have you, your brother, and your sister as my children.

Cheers

Great to see some good old fashioned character back in the game.
Congratulations Oldest Debutante for doing the Bluebag jersey proud.
Now enjoy your second retirement with a pie & a beer on the hill at Henson Park.
