Open handed strikes

Saw an incident last night that I have seen a hundred times since the strict 'no punching' policy came in. Blake plays the ball then advances on Brooks and hits him with an open hand strike. Brooks shrugs it off, appeals for a penalty but there's not one forthcoming.

5 years ago, that would have been a punch, but he obviously doesn't want to be sin binned so he doesn't clench the fist. Still, you can do a fair bit of damage with an open hand. If you are going to sin bin blokes automatically for punching (which I am not in favour of, personally), then shouldn't Blake have been sin binned last night for that? Or penalised, at least.

No argument from me mate.

I guess you somehow have to draw a line- a little cheeky slap is not the same as an open handed strike. Then again, not all punches are the same. In theory, a good open handed strike could do more damage than most of the punches you saw on the Rugby League field.

The game has turned into pansy tapping.

Again, I wasn't in favour of the blanket punch = bin rule.

It just seems odd that Blake (and others) can skirt around the rule by just not clenching a fist when they hit a bloke.

It was a very obvious lash out, which I thought at the time was unprovoked.

If the other player retaliated with a punch..off to the bin. Go figure.

Bird got binned for it against us, but he had do it twice for the refs to do anything about it. I thought that might have set a precedent but obviously not.

Just bring back punching FFS.

Ice hockey is a brutal sport, but kids still play it in junior leagues all over the US, Canada, Europe etc.

Stop pandering to the namby pamby political correct elements whining about everything.

Soon we will be playing touch footy to eliminate all aggression from the game. Can't have the little kiddies seeing heavy tackles and going out on the weekend trying to emulate.

Yep, it's going the way of the AFL. Next we will have the "jumper punch" and those ridiculous chest bumps/pushes as well as the slap. Embarrassing!
