When Origin started on Wednesday nights , players selected could play the weekend before and after. This was in line with prior historical NSW V QLD games ( based on where you were presently playing).

Only after key injuries / consideration of player fatigue was the ban on chosen players not playing for their clubs before Origin made formal and then split rounds introduced.

ISSUES
1) split rounds give an advantage to some teams .
2) Wednesday night games affect TWO rounds , before and after.

Better solution
1) do away with split rounds , ALL team play each round
2) move ALL Origin games to Sunday , means players miss ONE round , however only ONE round affected and at least ALL teams have to play . The only teams with real advantage are the ones with no Origin players selected. However at least only ONE round is affected not TWO.
3) Continue with current plan of playing the second Origin on Sunday and having NO NRL games , replaced by the current international games.

Next weekend is not a split round and all teams play and all players are eligible to play

Absolute joke. Bunnies would have pumped Eels last night with a full squad. An already on the ropes with injury Manly would have beaten Riff with JakeT and DCE. Roosters will probably win their origin round games due to Uncle Nick giving them a lot of depth. Needs to change.

Sunday Origin, a 22 round season and a midseason knockout comp when rep players aren't available is the best way to do this.

So souffs finally produce some Origin players and the 39 year old system needs changing, right

lol ,
cannot take away your Tigers bias or Souths envy/hatred and think and respond to the real question ,which does / would affect ALL teams now/future.

I am jack of watching sub standard games all this weekend and next in addition to the advantages given to some teams versus others.A professional sport should not be run with such bias is my view.

You had Cummins and still couldn't win.

I see the lols here. And they're worthy. But I do think there needs to be a change.

I'm happy with origin games being 3 weeks apart, but the NRL should be shut down the week they're played.

The problem is that the Origin coaches like having the players for longer. Wednesday Origins they're in camp for 10 days. Sunday Origins they're in for 7 days.

Something has to give.

If you want to suggest an alternative, it needs to be framed in a way that will demonstrate increased revenue for the game. For better or worse, that’s the primary driver of NRL decision making.

Origin makes a shitload of money. It will always be given priority.

Reducing NRL rounds impacts the bottom line in the broadcast deals. If you want to do so, they’d need to be replaced with something that makes dollars.

And Sunday nights are no better than Wednesday for the fan imo. Although a Sunday afternoon origin would be interesting. Daytime footy for an origin game feels downright weird. But it would be a curiosity.

Who benefits from a farce like Souths-Eels yesterday? Why do we have gutted teams playing in this terrible phase of the season every year? No other competition on earth does this. Imagine the English premier league or the NBA playing regular competition games while their best players are away.

If European football can pause every time there is an international period then so can the NRL.

Bring on 3 full week byes for club footy. To fill air time for the broadcasters and to support origin we can have Tonga v Samoa, PNG, women's Origin, underage rep etc. There would be plenty of footy still played, and the integrity of the club competition would be maintained.

There is literally no downside to this and only positives.

If the situation was reversed and Souths beat a derpleted Eels team, you wouldn’t have a problem.

You want Origin, games like last night are the by-product. Suck it up princess

A) I have always been annoyed by what Origin does to club footy. Even when we were at an advantage by keeping Sam and Isaac Luke and running through teams missing NSW/QLD blokes. B) We do not have to choose between one or the other. We simply have origin breaks like European football has multiple international breaks through the season.

That way we have 24 good rounds of club footy AND 3 rounds of rep footy.

Pretty sure channel 9 said a while ago that some NRL matches don't actually make a profit. Whether that is to be believed or not is another story.

What would change however is we'd lose the split rounds. So 8 games.... Doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

What we would miss out on is the media saturation that Wednesday Origins generates. That's something the NRL might baulk at. But I don't think they will. Next TV deal will be the return of stand alone origins IMO.

The quality of games this weekend has been frankly unbearable. I guess it doesn't help that it involves low altitude fliers like the Dogs and Penrith to begin with, but the combination of generally poor performing teams with Origin depleted sides has not been a good look. I'd much rather give every team the weekend off then put this shit to air.
