I don't know what everyone thinks of his decision but it certainly seems a case of good sportsmanship and speaking of sportsmanship he must be a good bloke because he was wearing a sharkies beanie during his interview..seems like all the good people in sports are shark supporters, yeh :D

Must be a champion then. In all honesty, his decision was the right one, but I wonder what he got for it.

Champion bloke.
He shouldnt of been put in that position in the first place. Australian Swimming have to have a look at their qualifying rules.

It was always going to end up that way. How can you deny the greatest swimmer EVER in that particular event the right to defend his Olympic medal. If the best swimmer in the world has swam a time in an olympic year that is fast enough to qualify then they should have an exemption IMO.

According to the SMH, he was paid $130,000 for the interview. There's no suggestion, though (as far as I know), that the money was dependent on which way he decided - it was just so that Channel Seven got the exclusive scoop.

I wonder what Grant Hackett thinks - he would have had a much better chance of a gold medal without Thorpie in the race.

I saw him interviewed Dean. He said that he prefers him there. He doesn't want to win a claytons gold medal does he?

He might think differently deep down.

I think that so much pressure was put on him by the media that he didnt have much if a choice.
Had he contested the 400 at Athens, and got anything less than a a Gold Medal and a World Record, he would have had to put up with everyone saying 'now if only Thorpie had swum that race'.

I applaud him for being so professional and mature throughout the past few weeks
