The sooner Australia is a republic the better.
I couldn't agree more.
We are big enough and old enough to run our own country. We don't need the British Royal Family having the last say on constitutional matters.
While we are at it, we need a flag change.
The Union Jack on our flag represents what we were in the past, not what we are now, and not what we will be in the future.
And the British history here and their treatment of the indigenous natives has been nothing to be proud of. So, f**k the Union Jack off.
The Canadians (still part of the Commonwealth) changed their flag to a Maple Leaf in their countries colours, and it is now one of the most recognisable flags on the planet.
If we changed our National Anthem back in the 70's (from God Save the Queen to Advance Australia Fair), why can't we change our flag? They are both equal symbols of Australia. I'd go for a Qantas style kangaroo symbol with the southern cross and change the colours to green and gold. I'd also have some red/yellow/black stripes in there somewhere to acknowledge our indigenous heritage.
Then, pick a new date for Australia Day, and our country would be at peace.
