Man, this is a huge f**k up. I saw the Transport Minister say the pass is down for min 3 months.

The f**k up is not that they didn’t do the tunnel - I get that they need to prioritise North South over West and then we have Nancy. The f**k up is the engineers not seeing the condition of the old retaining wall (my term) earlier so they could deal with the problem BEFORE it became a safety issue.

OK scrap the tunnel because the cost vs traffic business case doesn’t stack up maybe, but plan B is ensure that the pass is good for another 25 or 50 years FFS.

It could be even longer eventually, because this will need to be a quick fix just to get the road open again. A closure of 3 months is just not acceptable. It's the major access to the west. The Bells Line of Rd and the Darling Causeway just don't cut the mustard for access across the mountains.

Both political parties have been responsible for this failure for decades.
There was a solution, somewhat partly funded at first, however, funds would have been found to see it completed.
If anything, this is now serious enough to be pushing for federal funds to actually get the tunnel built.

This is prime Austraya doing nothing initially, and then everything costing more eventually.

BREAKING: Melbourne has been crowned the best city in the world for 2026

After coming fourth in 2025, Melbourne has climbed to the top of Time Out's annual global list
https://www.timeout.com/profile/leah-glynn
Big news! Time Out's 2026 ranking of the best cities in the world has just dropped, and Melbourne – yes, our Melbourne – has jumped three places (from fourth in 2025) to take out the number one spot. Cue the applause, fireworks and confetti, stat!
It's the first time ever that an Australian city has topped the annual list, with Melbourne previously peaking in second spot a decade ago in 2016. And our humble little metropolis outshone some heavyweights on the way to the top this year, beating out global powerhouses Shanghai, Edinburgh, London and New York, which rounded out the top five.

Even better, it's a celebration all round for Australia, with Sydney ranking 21st and Adelaide coming in at number 29. And while we can't promise we won't gloat about this for the next year (sorry, Sydney!), it's still an poignant reminder that Australia really is an exceptional places to live, visit and explore.

He’s begging for us to send in our ships so they can get sunk.

The problem, they say, is that big arse ships can’t do much against drones and mines and unmanned speed boats armed with mine / missile launchers

Some people just can’t handle women with strong opinions. Or maybe it depends on who they have strong opinion about. 🧐 Cos the people who seem most vocal about Grace or Randa, seem to love Pauline.

Someone needs to explain the meaning of 100% to Trump.
There is no “except for” or “but” with 100%.

is Iran still shooting missiles? Yes
Is Iran still using drones? Yes
Is Iran still using mines? Yes

Then you haven’t “destroyed 100% of their military capabilities”

dick.

Well Grace called Albo a coward over the weekend

So where are your balls atm

With Albo or Grace Tame.
Strong intelligent women don’t scare me mate.

For context she said..

In an essay published in Crikey on Friday, the advocate for sexual abuse survivors and human rights activist accused Anthony Albanese of being a “coward” and a “turncoat” for refusing to condemn the US-Israel strikes on Iran.

It was her most comprehensive rebuke of the PM since he called her “difficult” at a News Corp event when he was asked to describe public figures in one word. He later claimed he meant to describe her “difficult life”.

Tame, who was named Australian of the Year in 2021, said she had come up against a “well-oiled, well funded political propaganda machine” in recent months, adding the only reason Albanese found her “difficult” was because she had been “outspoken about Australia’s toxic alliance with the US and Israel”.

“Anthony Albanese has let us all down by capitulating to foreign powers who crave hegemony, profit from endless chaos, and whose interests conflict with our own,” she said.

“This was recently reinforced by how quickly the government moved to show support for the Iran war initiated by the US and Israel without congressional approval and in direct violation of international law.

“I don’t think Albanese is a bumbling misogynist. I think he’s a savvy political operator keen to appease Washington and Tel Aviv. It’s a badge of honour to weigh on his conscience.”

Tame contrasted Albanese’s historical advocacy for Palestine and critique of Australia’s involvement in the Iraq war with his current position on Iran, alleging as a “relatively defenceless Pacific middle power, Australia cannot afford to cut its military ties with the US and Israel”.

“We’re in a geopolitical chokehold,” she said.

“To Albanese, I am difficult because I am both aware of this reality and unafraid to scream it at the top of my lungs, much to his obvious chagrin.

“While he might feel safe describing me as such in the false comfort of a conservative bubble, I sincerely doubt he would say it to my face.”

I hope they all get bone spurs like you did. They should not be fighting your stupid war because Netanyahoo can't be a nice neighbour.

This is your Vietnam. You deal with it.

I’m a little concerned that to the victor go the spoils means it’s an inevitability that it’s a game of chicken between whether Trump or the rest of western world blinks first.

I’m also beginning to wonder if this “50 years of oil reserve” isn’t significantly overstated.
Cooker! Tin foil hat wearer.
Careful Baby, once the wondering and the concern begins, it's a slippery slope from there lol.
Good to hear. cheers.

Haha every year Melbourne gets the crown as the "best" city but even Melbournians would disagree.

Very true. A heap of them moving north and a heap more thinking about it.

Stupid ranking. Impossible to factor in everything that people look for in a city.

There will be no spoils. Short of a very large ground invasion Iran will still be there tomorrow and the next day. Weakened for sure, but still there.

Spoils will be a larger dictation on oil production and supply routes. Unlikely to be through full control of Iran obviously

It'll be interesting how relations pan out after the dust settles, there'll be more than a couple of Gulf states at least questioning what their military alliances actually give them. When they become a target because of them, and then don't see the protection they expect it's gotta have them wondering.
