"The atmosphere doesn't care how many people are contributing to emissions; it's the total quantity of emissions that matters."

Moreover, while Australia's emissions per capita have fallen, they remain among the highest in the world.
So do emissions per capita matter or just total emissions? If we have a small population we can afford to emit more per capita. It's one of the benefits of having low population density. The atmosphere doesn't give a f**k. China, India and the US are what the atmosphere is concerned about.

Plus if we have enough trees isn't it make up for it?

They are talking about the expansion of the Abbot Point Coal Terminal at Bowen.
They are talking out of their arses...

There is existing capacity that can be utilised. Assuming there is demand for further growth beyond Adani's initial project then there may need to be an expansion at the terminal, but that is a long way away.

But even if it is expanded, there is no plausible science that suggests that there will be any impact on the Great Barrier Reef. Plenty of political posturing masquerading as science, but the real science points to much bigger threats to the reef (including climate change which is the main reason that the terminal is targeted).

If it was a port development that facilitated tourism then you wouldn't have heard of it. It's only an issue because of the product being transported. Thermal f**king coal. I can eventually see a world without thermal coal but whilst you still have over a billion people without electricity, developing nations will look for the cheapest power sources available. No amount of climate change leadership from the Australian Government will change that fact. That said, a bit of leadership wouldn't f**king hurt.

Not to mention a country full of high quality resources that are in demand from the rest of the world.
