Bryson Goodwin signs up to play with New Zealand
By James Phelps From: The Daily Telegraph August 12, 2009 12:00AM

THEY have pinched Nathan Fien, Luke Covell, Brent Webb and Tonie Carroll and now New Zealand have snuck under the ARL's guard to snare Bulldogs ace Bryson Goodwin.

Yep, that's right, his dad "Lord" Ted played four Tests for the Kangaroos but Bryson yesterday signed on to play for New Zealand after a phone call from Stephen Kearney.

"I just faxed the form off," Bryson told Sport Confidential.

"Kearney called me on Monday and invited me to join the New Zealand train-on squad and it was an offer I couldn't refuse."

Goodwin, who grew up in Perth before moving to Sydney as a teenager, said he would proudly represent the Kiwis because of his ancestry.

"My grandmother (Ted's mum) is a full Maori," the NRL's leading tryscorer said.

"So I have a lot of Kiwi in me."

In red-hot form with the Bulldogs, Goodwin is turning his back on a potentially long State of Origin career.

"He is playing great and I think that it is awesome the Kiwis have recognised that. He will do them proud," brother Bronx said.

Not wanted by the Sharks at the end of last year, Bryson has proved to be one of the buys of the year and will no doubt be an asset during the Four Nations at the end of the year.

He has scored 18 tries for the Dogs so far this season

Good player, but to say he's potentially turning down a long State of Origin career is drawing a particularly long bow.

I doubt he'll even earn a place in the Kiwis' top XVII.

So, 18 tries for the doggies this year is not enough ????

No, not necessarily

He has to make his way past Vatuvei, Tiuaki, Perrett, Nightingale...

He may not get there this year

Not necessarily, no. Tuiaki has 18 also and I would put the house on Vatuvei claiming one wing spot if he's fit. Then as is said above, you still have Perrett who is in strong form for a rubbish team if he is not considered for fullback.

^Perrett better be fullback. He's keeping Minichiello out of the Roosters #1. If they chuck Hohaia into fullback again (after not playing there at all this season) i'm gonna be pissed. I'd rather Locke.

Or Webb?

I was factoring in Webb, but I'd be more than happy with Perrett.

you're joking ?

on form alone (which i think players should be selected on  ) Goodwin has the spot.

perretts a f/back
tuiaki is a tongan rep
nightingale is useless - cant make the drags 1st grade squad.
manu is a legend - but he'll be under the knife.

Ozbash, Tuiaki is has 4 caps for New Zealand. He was not selected for the New Zealand world cup squad, which is why he sought to play for Tonga, much the same as Hayne for Fiji. Do you think Australia will hesitate in picking Hayne?

He should be there this time around. His form is better than Goodwin's and he has a great combination with Marshall. So there's one spot.

I haven't heard definitively that Manu will be under the knife; if that's true, then Goodwin's changes improve- but he won't get past Perret easily. He is the incumbent, and in good form. If he doesn't get the fullback spot, then he should get the wing- I know you think he is only a fullback, but if I have learnt one thing this year, it is that you don't know your arse from your elbow.

I can't believe I nearly missed that

:lol::lol::lol:

Ozbash believes that players should be picked on form alone...

Two words prove that is BS

nightingale is useless - cant make the drags 1st grade squad.

If you did your research you would find he is injured

And if you investigated a bit further, you will find a quote from Wayne Bennett saying that he is 1 of the 1st blokes he picks every week, and has been vauable for them off the bench this season covering many different roles

Nightingale was probably our best player on the park in the ANZAC test this year. But Perret would have to be my number one fullback right now, Nightingale to the wing perhaps.

I just hope it's all legit...we don't want another 'Grannygate.'

All this Country musical chairs stuff makes me uneasy. If he definately wants to be a Kiwi and play as one (and qualifies), I guess it's okay if his heart is REALLY in it. I just get the feeling many pick the Kiwi option as the quicker path to international Rep, and that they may not get a hope of getting the Aussie Jersey.

The Main thing is one country is picked at the start, pledged, and stuck with. Tony Carroll, I'm looking in your direction
