The Penrith Panthers have sacked coach Anthony Griffin just four weeks out from the finals.

The Panthers notified Griffin on Monday afternoon that his services would not be required beyond the end of this season despite being contracted until the end of 2020.

Griffin in turn walked away from the job, leaving assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo as the caretaker for the rest of the season.

It's understood Penrith have made the decision to part ways with Griffin because of a belief he is unable to take the club to a premiership.

The Panthers have won their past two matches, coming from behind to topple Manly and Canberra over the past fortnight.

However, it has done little to disguise the issues that have been brewing over the past couple of months at the club, with the board stepping in on Monday to bring it to a head.

Ciraldo is understood to be close to star Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary and could play a leading role in helping to keep him at the club beyond 2019.

Game of thrones in Sydney west - plenty going on behind the scenes I guess. Whispers have been out there for weeks now. Any murmurs from the flood zone down woolooware?

Griffin was told he wouldn’t be required next season, and then was given the option to stay until seasons end or walk now, he chose the latter.

No sympathy.

The guys a prick apparently.

Forced benny barba to put on weight and play with a dodgy ankle.
Gagai was forced to put on weight or not get a game. Justin hodges tells the story of how hard it was to watch as the young gagai was couch surfing. No money and trying to eat 24 hours a day - before griffin sacked him.

He got the donks job as paul white was his old mate who sacked henjak to bring hook in. Whats goes around..
