What about this for an idea...

If youre eligible for NSW you play for NSW.
And if youre eligible for QLD you play for them.

And if youre not elible for either you watch it with the rest of us.
Even if youre a really really really good footballer and based just on that fact you believe you have a god given right to play - unfortunately you cant.

Even if you live in England and love SOO you still cant play or if youre canadian, scottish or even Tongan - Too bad.

And if you are eligible for Samoa or Tonga and want to play for them and play SOO, well choose one - because you aint that f**king special - nor bigger than the SOO concept despite what your cuzzies tell you.

You see it was originally created as NSW v QLD.
And so it should remiain.

Id love to play soccer for Brazil.
In the world cup.
Probably wouldnt mind a run in the All Blacks as well.
Im sure Chad would probably love a run with Penrith on Friday and l know will kennedy wants a game for storm one week and then turn out for the roosters the next.
But alas...

You see thats the great thing about sport.
Eligibility.
But that’s the point. You can be eligible to play for a state and for a tier 2. Luai is eligible, he was born in and raised Sydney.....Fisher Harris is not, being a NZ native. There’ll be instances of grey creep in, but I reckon they’ve got the eligibility rules about right.

If you started and spent dominant amount of junior leeg in NSW/QLD then you should be eligible and then if your Kiwi/Pasifika/Pom/whatever you should be eligible for them. The problem though isn’t that it tarnishes Origin, it’s that it tarnishes those national teams. It’s admitting that Origin is a more worthy selection than playing for your country. Down the line that is going to reduce the international game.
Plus Luai is a wanker.

NSW & QLD are pathways to the Australian team.
Not Samoa, Tonga or NZ.
Incorrect, state of origin maybe be representative, but its not international rep, ypu can claim pathways all you want, but if your born in Australia then you can play for aus, but if you play RL at junior grade in one of NSW or QLD states then your eigible for state of origin.
State of Origin is its own beast, just coz the kangaroos have picked the best from those teams, don't mean its a pathway..
There are players that have played for Australia prior to ever getting a SoO callup/jumper.
I see no reason in being able to represent your country, wherever you stem from, and play SoO if you grew up in Aus

If the Blues lose tonight I'm blaming Scummo, (and Carch) and furcan Penriff.

Psssts got the Pizza organised and picked up a deep pan apple pie and some Reduced to clear Custard. I'm in the Party mood already.

I can't wait for all the 'with force' and 'high contact' and 'six againers'. It is going to be beaut, just like Origins of Old. All those 'in the bins' and 'on reports' ....... yeee harrr.

okay we will come the other way then.
name one player who has represented Australia who's ineligible to represent either QLD or NSW.
what you have suggested has certainly happened.
it is largely the exception rather than the rule and due to test matches that were played before origin in years gone or bolters from the finals series for tests at the end of the year.

its an eligibility pathway.
no player gets picked who can't represent either QLD or NSW.

It was originally stated and rightfully so that it is a selection trial for the Australian team.
Maybe its changed.
It probably has.
Everything else has.

It comes down to two preferences.
You either want a bonifide match between two states featuring inhabitants of the country those 2 states make up.
Or..
You want an allstars match. And get something like a sheffield shield game where nsw could play qld and the winning side could actually be totally made up of overseas players.

SOO Qualification:
To qualify for SOO you must be eligible AND elect to play for Australia and have not represented another Tier 1 Nation at a Senior Level (England/New Zealand)

Luai is eligible under the eligibility criteria but has not selected to play for Australia.

SOO Eligibility:
1. Born in NSW
2. Resided in NSW prior to 13th Birthday
3. Father played SOO

He's Samoan but he is from NSW.
It's that simple.
He's actually Australian of Samoan descent who has chosen to represent Samoa internationally and not his birth country.
The rules are clear on this with regard to SOO.
He should not be playing.
