AFTER more than a century in the rugby league limelight, Newtown Jets are on the verge of falling by the wayside if they fail to find an NRL partner for next year.
The Sydney Roosters have announced its nine-year partnership with the iconic foundation club will finish at the end of this season, leaving the Jets future in the NSW Cup in doubt.
The result would be a bitter blow for the “Bluebags” and its board, who have poured a significant amount of cash into the club to keep it afloat and competing in the second-tier competition.
Director Terry Rowney said the Jets had been left “out in the cold”, confirming the Roosters will walk away from the deal at the end of this season.
The Roosters have chosen Wyong Roos as its NSW Cup partner from next year, forcing Newtown to find another NRL partner club.

Mr Rowney said the Roosters’ decision was a complete shock. He said the partnership would have helped the “renewal” of rugby league in the inner-west, but the Roosters “have chosen to go in a completely different direction”.
“The Roosters don’t have juniors and are trying to develop a base up in the Central Coast,” he said.
Mr Rowney said although it was still early days, the Jets would engage other NRL clubs to form a new relationship.
“We’re going to speak to some people,” he said.
“All the other clubs in NSW Cup are connected to the NRL except for Newtown at the moment, so we’ll have to see what happens.”
