MANLY halfback Matt Orford has revealed a deep desire to captain the Sea Eagles next season as he looks to take his career to the next level.

Orford believes assuming the captaincy from Ben Kennedy will only benefit his game and increase his chances of finally cracking it for a NSW Origin jersey.

The in-form No 7 is one on a small list of candidates in line to replace Kennedy.

Brent Kite, Steve Menzies and Jason King will also come under consideration.

Orford yesterday emphatically put his case forward.

``If I was given the opportunity to captain the side I wouldn't shy away from it,'' he said as Manly wrapped up a slick one-hour training session at Brookvale.

``I've been playing first grade now for five years and have played under some good captains in Robbie Kearns, Stephen Kearney and Ben Kennedy.

``I've had a chance to pick their brains and watch the way they carry themselves on and off the field.

``They've all had an aura as captains and leaders and if I had the chance to captain a side I'd like to have a shot at it.

``We will see what happens next year but if I was to get it I think it would only improve my game and take it a step further.

``I'd be up to the challenge.''

Kennedy has distanced himself from the captaincy debate, preferring to concentrate on Manly's push towards the top eight.

Asked who should replace him as skipper next year, Kennedy declared: ``I've got no comment on the captaincy.

``It's not my problem it's Dessie's (Hasler's).

``There are a number of leaders here and a number of blokes who want to do it and I don't want to single one out.

``That's next year . . .we've still got plenty to play for this year.''

Hasler added: ``There is plenty of football to come before we start thinking about next year.

``I haven't given it (the captaincy) any thought.

``We will cross that bridge when we come to it but we have some good candidates.''

The Sea Eagles meet Penrith at Brookvale Oval on Sunday in a game they must win to stay in touch with the top four.

Beaver gave up the captaincy remember, it was effecting his game. Orford has been the VC so he's ready to lead Manly now plus if he had've stayed at Melbourne he probably would've been the captain.
