P Platers

In NSW, (and possibly elsewhere) there has been much talk about p platers and the high rate of accidents, injuries and deaths. there have been numerous solutions discussed - the introduction of a night-time curfew so somewhere in the region of 10pm - 6am, for these drivers, a limit on passengers, a limit on the type of car they can drive (horsepower limit I think?), etc.
What are everyone’s thoughts on this issue?
Personally, speaking as someone on their red p's and soon to get my greens, I am against the idea of a night time curfew for 2 reasons, firstly I know many people that work night-time jobs and would be in trouble otherwise. secondly as someone that goes out to all hours on most weekends it will make travel near impossible - public transport is a joke and as anyone knows trying to get a taxi is near impossible (and bloody expensive!!!) if the govt was to address the issues involved in travel for p platers at tis time then maybe
A limit on the number of passengers is the most ludicrous thing I have heard - getting one p plater to drive 4 mates will mean 5 people in the one car, limiting them to one passenger will mean 2 other cars driven by p platers on the road at the same time - a bigger risk?
limiting the type of car to be driven is a good idea in principle - preventing p platers from driving big powerful cars which they may find difficult to drive probably has the best chance at working to cut the toll, only problem is if daddy or mummy drive one of these cars.
All of the ideas above will not be taken lightly by p platers, many of whom, if these measures are introduced, will simply remove their p plates.

Its funny when they talk about the night time curfews and only 1 person in the car at the one time etc etc.
They get this great stats from where?
The USA, where you can start driving at age 15

Now why are we being compared to a country where thats the legal age? what a joke, and the other country they are comparing it to is NZ, where the road system there is 10 folds better then Australia, its such a load of shit.

Curfew is not the answer.

totally against the idea of a curfew, i work from 6 pm till late so it would f**k me, up - but then again, i'll be one of the thousdands of p plate drivers that will take the risk and not show then

as for ur other ideas, so when we get on our blacks and we CAN drive with a full car or some hotted up shit box with huge amounts of power, its like going back onto your p's, you lack the experience. Experienc in these two kinds of areas doesnt seem that big a deal but simply it is

Pretty hard to enforce a curfew on P platers

Like Mullet said, what happens if you drive to work during the day, and have to get home of a night.

It would seem logical to me, to not let P platers register cars with V8s or hotted up sixes

but surely, after 3 years of basic driving with a less powerful car, you will have the experience needed to drive a more powerful car

you'll also be much more mature

A "Restricted" license in NZ (I think this is the eqviliant of P's) allows you to drive only between 7am (Maybe 6???) and 10pm and take no passengers, unless each passenger has a full license (Still have the curfew) or you have one passenger who has had their full license for 2 or more years sitting in the front. But they don't have to have any plates up. So I think you guys are pretty sweet at the moment compared to us...

I agree that seems the only viable solution from the above, limits on the vehicles.
They do it with motorcycles in NZ I think, 400cc max for your first bike???

What about compulsory defensive driving courses or something?

I reckon it should be ok if the owner of the vehicle is present, i've driven my old man's V8 with him in it once, not on the mainsteam road, but still...

Compulsory driving courses are essential.

It is only after you lose control of a car that you start to appreciate that you need to do everything you can to make sure you don't on the road.

So many people (young AND old) who haven't been in an accident think they are ten feet tall and untouchable.

It is this "arrogance" which causes so many accidents.

A curfew wouldnt work because the drivers on their P's who stick to the speed limit and are safe drivers would obey the curfew, while the drivers on their P's who arent as cautious and speed etc would just take their P plates off and drive anyway. This means the safe drivers who wouldnt crash are the losers and the type of drivers who bring the road toll up will just take their P plates off and keep driving and probably keep crashing.

its a pile of shit
ive got a mate who dosnt drink at all, for reasons i wont go into, but he is quite happy to come out with us and drive us around and drop us off at home in the wee hours just so we dont ever contemplate drink driving. If these curfews come in he wont be able to do that. Plus i know plenty that have night time jobs where they need to drive, how do they get money then?

dont mind the restrictions on what type of cars they can drive, horsepower wise etc but the night time curfew is a pile of shit

Let us drive whenever we want!
Well stop f**king killing yourselves and others on the road! If P platers showed some more maturity then none of this would have to be discussed.
Its a fact that when a lot of P drivers get in the car with their mates they get easily distracted and want to show off by driving fast.

I will not follow a curfew if they impose one.

Neither will I. I'm a P plater and I realise that they are genuine in finding a way to decrease the death toll on P plater's but imposing a curfew is BS. Why not lock us in a prison cell while your at it. I refuse to be penalised and have my right of freedom taken away because some yobbo's act irresponsibly and drink and drive endangering their lives and the lives of innocent motorists and bystanders.
