If you look at the sides who have been consistently competitive in the NRL over the past 15 years (Manly, Brisbane and Melbourne*) they have all focussed on gathering a strong core and building around it.
Brisbane- Lockyer, Walters, Webcke, Tallis
Melbourne- Slater, Cronk, Smith
Manly- Lyon, Stewart, Foran, DCE

I see Souths going through this process now with Inglis, Reynolds, Luke and Keary/Sutton meaning good management should see them in contention for years to come.
Now to sustain that you need a good coach and great talent ID.

We're in a situation now where we have the talent to set up a 'dynasty'. Last time we screwed it up with terrible management. This time we have the coach and the juniors, we now need to identify a core of players who will be the heart of the team for the next 10 years. Once we find them we need to be ruthless in our squad management to ensure we keep them.

So who do you think those 4 guys will be for 2015 onwards?

I'd say at this stage it looks like DWZ, Cartwright, Segeyaro and ?
The other needs to be a half (johnson).

If we were to snag Johnson then along with the 3 you mentioned it isn't a bad start. I would throw Grant & McKendry in there as well and make it 6.

I don't know if we can count on holding onto both of them. The Bennett school of thought is not to bother with 400k plus props. Those guys could both be in that category and it could cost us the more important spine players.

We don't really have a big 3 or 4 in terms of wages. But I think we have some decent match winners in our team. I see them as Soward, Segeyaro and Taylor.

With an excellent platform being set by Grant, McKendry, Kite and Plum as a front row that will rival any. I think our games will be won on those 3 players dominating off the back of a forward pack that matches or dominates nearly every week. Our full strength front row should be good for 400+ metres a game pretty comfortably. Along with some ridiculous quality even in our depth in the second row.

Throw in the class of Whare in the centres, and the battle of Josh Mansour, Kevin Naiqama, David Simmons, James Roberts and Molan for those other 4 positions and we have quality right through the team. With the likes of George Jennings, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Waqa Blake, Tony Satini, Keiran Moss etc. all keeping the first grade players honest in their hopes of playing some first grade.

I think the only piece of the puzzle missing for us to be a genuine premiership is the star halfback. Wallace can and will lead us to the finals with Soward. But he's not going to be able to lead us all the way... unless Soward regathers his 2009/2010 form and only needs a halfback that won't get in his way.

Soward and Wallace are two of your spine for the next few years which is why you won't win a premiership in that time. bahabahabahaba

Luckily for us bellyache this conversation is about 2015 when our side presumably hits its premiership window. Thus why my big 4 was 2 guys who have never played first grade, a player who is signed with the Warriors and a very talented bench hooker.

We currently don't have anyone near the calibre of Smith, Slater, Cronk, DCE, Foran, Stewart, Inglis. I think we will by finals time 2015. Who do we pass the ball to when the whips are cracking in those games. That is what this conversation is about.

Next year I think our heart will be Whare, Segeyaro, Soward and Taylor (or could be Peachey). Keep those guys on the field and we probably make the finals.

I don't think we're going to see a side built around a big x number of players. We're looking at retaining a core group of juniors who have come up together, and building a strong team as a whole.

Bennett did it at the Dragons, and I'd say that Hasler had and now Toovey has that at Manly. The success of that side hasn't come from 4 key individuals - it has come from having well balanced talent across the park. We certainly to be building a balanced squad as it is; culling overpaid assets in exchange for strengthening multiple positions.

That said, there is obviously a correlation between a quality spine and a 'big x' - but I'd be focusing on these positions rather than 4 randomly scattered good players.

I think that the widespread retention of our winning u20s squad is pretty indicative of this. In a few years time, we'll have a group of players who have come up together, play for each other, and play well together.

Yes, Bryce, DWZ, Segeyaro are seemingly standouts right now, but everyone of those players resigned has first grade potential. DWZ is still a couple of years off for a start.
