The NRL has suspended Penrith Toyota Cup player David Hatzimarkos for 12 matches under the Illicit Substances Testing Policy.

The policy requires each club to conduct a minimum of 70 tests at NRL level and 70 tests at Toyota Cup level throughout each year for illicit substances. These tests are conducted both in and out of season.

Any player who returns two positive tests faces a 12-match suspension. Penrith reports that both positive tests were recorded this calendar year.

Tests under the policy are conducted over and above the game’s drug testing program under the World Anti-Doping Agency Code and test only for illicit substances in circumstances that would not be a breach of the WADA code.

The policy provides for a player to receive a suspended fine of five percent of his playing contract for the year, mandatory drug counselling, a written employment warning and follow-up testing for a first offence. The player is also entitled to complete confidentiality at this point.

A second offence incurs an automatic 12-match suspension, payment of the suspended fine and the right of the club to either terminate the player’s contract or impose a further penalty of 10 percent of the yearly playing contract.

Penrith have advised that they have terminated their contract with the player and that they will continue to provide drug counselling and support as is specified under the policy.
