It's really hard to pinpoint what is going on with the team at the moment.
We seemed to have so much energy and enthusiasm in the squad for a long time, grinding teams to dust and running away with it in the last 15 minutes.
Players looked tired and our defence slow at the back end of this one.
The points are everything and we can use the old saying "winning while not playing well" to make ourselves feel good but we are not even close to the performances we had last year and early on in the season.

Injuries do that. We went in a forward light Yeo only played 8 mins. May went off injured after moving to the pack. Kikau had the HIA stint

Mitch Kenny tries hard and plays tough. He puts his body on the line but his technique is nowhere near say Api and other defensive hookers. He rushes up to lead the line speed but gets bumped off a lot by hard to tackle guys like Lodge, Hass, TPJ, NAS, etc. Which is a good thing because despite being out of his depth he slows forwards down and gets on toughness. Thinking we need a lock forward like Eishunhuth to try and compensate for him. Both of our tight games against Brisbane this year have in part been through Lodge targeting him the first time and Hass targeting him the second time. It'd be better in attack if say May replaced Yeo at lock forward but our middle forwards can't afford it defensively especially with Fish out. Maybe Hop'good's option. He's a very good tackler and play a bit like a discount Cameron Murray.

NAS was targeted Luai last time. I hope the Storm targets one of our halves because if they work Kenny over and he starts fatiguing on top of being mismatched we could be in for a bad backend to the game. I think he'd really stuff up his passing and basics if he has to make 60+ tackles.

Kenny had to play 80 with no utility on the bench. Those big minutes really hurt. Especially without Yeo defending next to him.

Not sure, but i always felt that we threw these games or atleast were told to keep it close, that and foxtel seems to beef up the bronx adverts = kevvie and allen!!!!!! WTF? Where's brandy and royce. I suppose it gives half the RL population hope that penrith could be beaten by their bronx..

What’s Salmon done to Cleary? Surely he’s deserved some minutes last night and in previous games. Was adequate for Parra the last couple of season and surely offers something at half or defensively more than Naden at centre. If Cleary is out next week, got to be in the 17 and get some time. Even if it’s just to give Kenny a rest.

Surprised no ones really mentioned Kiks other than @age.s . Thought he was far and away our best. Great game from him.

People getting a little to wrapped up in scores put on shit teams. Storm were bog average on Friday as well, they know there’s more important things coming.

May being out too. Surely Salmon now gets a run. I would of brought him on at 9 and gave Kenny a breather

Salmon played well during his time with the Eels. He’s a big body and will take the line on. I wouldn’t say he’s the fastest half but he’s very handy depth. Good passing game and has a decent boot on him.

We could have used him earlier in the year and/or given him a run in several games.

The only issue is that IC won’t use him unless his hand is forced.

We signed him for next year. No point doing that and not playing him

Absolutely.

One criticism I have of IC is his use of depth. We have it, use it.

If you look at last season, the Storm, Roosters, Eels and Bunnies rested players leading up to the finals. Penrith, not so much. IC rotated the top 17 and moved players into and out of position.

We do see plenty of players who were earmarked to come into FG, so I’m not criticising his planning, rather the use of the specialist players when we need them.

At least it seems that way.

Not the score line we expected.but let’s look at the result
No Cleary api
Yeo our after 8 minutes
May injured early and was a passenger due to injury most of the game
Defence was brilliant bar the last 10 .that was a reflection of some of the above.the troops are coming.the roosters game if Cleary back TPJ in there we might start heading forward .we won a game last night we would have lost a few years ago
Up the panthers

That's down to Cleary's game management. Keeps us fresh and them worn down.

The Panthers game plan is pretty simple but is heavily reliant on Cleary’s kicking game. Kick into the corners and get a well set line to smash their players; ideally 2-3 people in every tackle to stop the offloads, push them back and allow the line the time to reload for the next play.

In attack, the first 2-3 plays are taken up by the outside backs, giving the big pigs a chance to catch their breath. Ball movement also helps to take gas out of the oppositions big guys. Repeat until the other side makes a mistake.

As WestyLife points out, this is heavily dependant on the game management of Cleary; not just the size of his boot, but the choice of kicks. He is also instrumental when we get the opportunity to attack to identify where and how to attack the opposition.
