This deal is for 18 months I believe and cost Toshiba 150mil.......but they needed to do something. They better pump out the releases in that time for it to make a difference and be worthwhile.

Would $150 mil justify cutting off a leg to spite your arm?

It has never made much buisness sense to me, narrowing your market, especially when this new format war has not indicated which side it is leaning.

If your talking about paramount Syd raider then I would take the deal. They wont sell 150mil worth of discs in 18months and then once its over they are allowed to release on both again.
They cant really loose.

If your talking about Toshiba then they should be throwing money at people who are only stocking blue ray not companies that are releasing on both.

I read somewhere that Walmart is gonna have a $100US HD DVD player this Christmas as loss leader.

If true Blu-Ray will have some serious price cutting to do.

There's an HD-DVD add-onm coming for the XBox 360 too- and and as the 360 is priced lower that could negate a lot of the advantage that the PS3 has with being HD-ready.

Yeah that will be interesting to see what sort of effect it has. That is where the price needs to be to really start motivating people to join a format war as you dont lose to much if it bombs.

The 360 add on has been available for ages (in the US, dont know about here) and has equal share to the number of stand alone players in the US (I think from memory about 150,000 each but dont quote me).

I dont really get it though as it doesnt affect the game side of the 360, it only plays movies........so all its good for is saving an input I guess as its a stand alone player that plays through your 360 but no games can come on it.

The 360 HD-DVD add on has been available in aust since march although obviously it's not very well marketed.

As for this deal Paramount are on record as saying that it's for an indefinete period as far as they are concerned.

I'm still waiting for a sub $2000 TV that can do everything I want better than a 15 year old CRT.

For example it needs to display fast moving pictures without chopping or ghosting, responding on time in Guitar Hero and viewable from a wide angle.

A high resoultion still image is nice but not much use when fast moving action occurs.

And the 360 HD-DVD drive also works on a PC. It works on Vista out of the box. If you want to use it on XP, then you need to download unofficial drivers off the Net(otherwise it will just act as a regular DVD drive). So if you have a media-centre PC, simply hook it up and use that.

And in time I'm sure games will be released on HD-DVD. They will work on the X-Boc-360(If the functionality isn't there now, it'll only be a firmware upgrade required). And you'll be able to play HD-DVD games on the PC now with the drive.

I wish I could find the article I read claiming it was an 18 month deal.....someones mistaken.

I also dont get 'as far as they are concerned'.....what does the contract say?

Be interesting to find out as an indefinate deal is far more worthwhile than the 18 month one I read.

Movie moguls like Paramount made a decision that's based on cost, Why would they go with the less inferior and more expensive blu ray...

the thing is blurays long term capabilties and advantages over HDDVD far outweigh actual need at the moment.. and in 5 or so years time when the full extent of bluray will be "required" - there will be even newer and better technologies available. HDDVD is a plenty adequate, cheaper and more natural progression from DVD. bluray is needlessly shooting for the moon. it's like owning a ferrari and only driving down the street once a week to pick up a bottle of milk.
