Why not provide each of our juniors a personal mentor/coach as they move through the pathways process. These montors/coaches should help to address attitude, skill shortfalls and fitness targets - weight, running speed etc. They should also be able to speak with the team coach on behlf of players if the player wants.

It’s all under control possm, Basil is all over that. He’s the man overseeing this

The future landscape in NRL clubland is shedding staff not creating more.

That is a pipe dream of the highest order but we definitely should have Matt Cooper, Gasnier, Blacklock, Soward etc come every now and again and do some sessions as Matt Cooper stated in that article.

NRL clubs run on fumes, losing a fair bit every year. This isn't some uber professional sport run by great sporting minds that can turn this into a money making machine like the NFL.

Walnut stamper Millward, who is in charge of out pathways should be evidence enough.

So, at what level does this start?

Realistically, would have to be from SG Ball and HM.

Now let's go from there
SG Ball has 2 teams so total, lets say 40 players
HM has 2 teams so again, lets say 40 players.
The 'mentor' follows the footballer through the grades ie: SG Ball > JF > CC > NRL

So 80 'mentors' per year. Mmm there goes our admin cap.

I understand whT you are getting at, but ultimately the 'mentor' role is the job of coach.
The roadblock unfortunately kicks in at the NRL level.

A mentor doesn’t have to be a salaried position. The club could use fans who volunteered who would be good role models regarding say fitness, community expectations and financial responsibility and have and are held in high esteem in the community .

group 7 and Illawarra are both having 13, 14, and 15’s development squads / program however the current shut down has put the process back.

The club/region also has the Laurie Daley / Andrew Johns cup sides as development opportunities as well.

I like the concept of a player mentor system possm. Some companies implement a similar practice where senior members of staff help graduates with their professional development. From my experience only about a half to a third of young people see value in the mentor system and want to be part of it. In a rugby league environment, I would think the mentor would need to have grade experience without necessarily being a top player. The mentor could meet with the player once a week to review progress, provide advice and help with issues that may be troubling the player. Depending on the situation they may choose to speak on a more frequent basis.
