Paul Mellor

He added something in the backs, his first 2 games off bench were ok, but had great game last night, he runs to the holes made couple of nice runs, one leading to try, and dangerous near goal line, one on one with most centres is more powerful, already seems good combo with Covell on wing, and Gallen working on inside of him

A great game? :?

He played well but I wouldn't say he played great. Paul Gallen played great.

I thought Mellor did have a good game; justified Raper's selection decision anyway. Carried blokes when he made hitups, didn't put a foot wrong in defence. Couldn't ask for much more.

Yep he is a better option than McGoldrick.
His combination with the slowest winger in the comp,
was terrific

He made excelent yardage. Goldy will find it tough to get back in the side won't he?

Paul Mellor was the main Culprit in the Carl Webb try.
Mellor is bigger & stronger than Webb & had the best shot on him. There were others too.
If it was Goldy or Simmons making that miss, the forum would be in an uproar.

Fair enough point Reefy about the Mellor miss on Webb, but jeez...I thought he more than made up for it myself. The guy actually goes looking for work...I can't remember McGoldrick doing that too often?Hopefully McGoldrick will get some form and confidence back in the lower grade so he can then press mellor...good for the club.

Yes agreed good for the club.

Just had a very close look at mellors game. And FTR I think he should be in the side.

But the point is we have a guy who has been dropped so I think it is quite topical seeing most people cant make sense of it.

In another thread I posted on what Goldy was doing wrong. The high ball & all tackles, too many steps before the defender etc.

Well I thought Mellor actually had a very average game last night.
here are his mistakes

Webbs Try.

Another missed tackle for a thurston line break. Luckily the lethargic cowboys didnt support.

Held up over the line after sustained pressure. We then turned the ball over.
If he had have stepped(like Goldy) held the ball in both hands, Unco was in in the corner.

The Dykes try was very lucky. The pass to Unco, was at his ankles. I have no idea how he caught it at pace. He lost his momentum due to the bad pass & luckily swing a one armer back in for Dykes to pick up.

I dont see any improvement in the side with Mellor in the centres.
Maybe on Vaganas side, because I dont think the big show can pass on the left side. Noticed not one clean ball to Unco to have crack last night compared to the week before when Goldy laid about 5 passes on him in space.

the benefits of Mellor are obvious with his size & position flexibility.

He should be on Dave Simmons Wing.
& Goldy should be in the team.

yeah i noticed that miss on webb on replay. webb's still a big handful of man and one of the hardest to stop, but mellor should have at least got into the tackle with the shoulder, not the arm flap a la mcgoldrick lol.

dodgy pass to unco - checked that one too. but he did do a lot of good things. made a lot of tackles and a took a lot of runs for a lot of meters. 134m i think ?

tough call to drop simmons after that game. but it's a tough game and i still think that would goldy back to centre and mellor to simmo's wing would be our best possible line-up.

barring injury i doubt we'll be seeing it anytime soon so i sincerely hope simmo proves all his detractors horribly wrong or at least finds more and more ways to make positive contributions to the team to balance out his other weaknesses as a footballer yada yada yada

Webbs Try.

3 sharks fell off web
mellor was in an awkward position as the player who had webb marked fell off him without slowing him down

Held up over the line after sustained pressure. We then turned the ball over.
If he had have stepped(like Goldy) held the ball in both hands, Unco was in in the corner.

geez thats drawing a long bow

getting over the tryline was something goldy had trouble with

and it commonly leads to tries

The Dykes try was very lucky. The pass to Unco, was at his ankles. I have no idea how he caught it at pace. He lost his momentum due to the bad pass & luckily swing a one armer back in for Dykes to pick up.

nonetheless he was working hard for that try and i thought the winger should have came in closer

I dont see any improvement in the side with Mellor in the centres.

mellor hit holes and dragged in defence

thats what a center is supposed to do

a few of the cowboys limped and staggered after he hit them

the benefits of Mellor are obvious with his size & position flexibility.

probably agree

but if i had to make a choice between mellor and goldy it would be mellor every day of the week

the self proclaimed forum guru cant see the forest for the trees!

mellor is a better option for cronulla than mcgoldrick .

I still think he would be better off the bench, more impact. Hands on hips and sucking in the big ones most of the game.

All fair points Reefy...

But I will just remind you that after Dyke's game against the Dogs, I suggested that his mistakes (knock ons, silly passes) cost us quite a few points.

You suggested that it was 'unwarranted criticism' or words to that effect.

Based on some of the comments posted here about his game, I think we could put Mellor's game in that same context. I look forward to a good look at the replay though, as I havent seen the game on teev yet.
