Sharks ready to battle the Bulldogs
The Sharks face a test of both their credibility as well as their semi final credentials when they take on the equal premiership leaders the Canterbury Bulldogs at Toyota Park on Sunday afternoon.
Two impressive victories in succession without skipper Brett Kimmorley and fullback David Peachey, sees the Sharks in eighth spot on the Premiership ladder with eight rounds of the competition remaining. A win against the high-flying Bulldogs would cement their position in the top eight while also making the other contenders sit up and take notice.
The Sharks will be looking for a major contribution from New Zealand international Nigel Vagana in what will be his first game against his former club. Vagana was still recovering from a pre-season shoulder operation when the teams met in round two earlier this year and will be keen to put his old teammates in their place.
Again leg injuries to Kimmorley and Peachey will keep them on the sidelines, with Jason Kent deputizing at halfback once more and David Simmons slotting into the fullback role. Both players have been among the Sharks better performers over the past two weeks.
A lot of the responsibility will also fall on the Sharks forward pack, up against the likes of Mark O'Meley, Willie Mason and Stephen Price, however if Jason Stevens can repeat his man-of-the-match performance of last week, the Sharks will go a long way towards controlling their opposition big men and of coming out on top in the final wash-up.
Also interesting will be the debut in Premier league of mid-season signing Vince Mellars who has joined the Sharks from the New Zealand Warriors. The giant young centre missed last week's game with a finger injury but is almost certain to take his place in the Sharks Premier League team for this week's game.
The NRL clash between the Sharks and Bulldogs kicks off at Toyota Park at 2.30pm, with the Premier League match beginning at 12.30pm. The Jersey Flegg Sharks have the weekend off due to the bye, however a match between the two teams competing in the NSW Police competition will start proceedings that match getting underway at 11am. Gates open at 10.45am.
