Teams conceding a great variety of penalties is something that makes sense. As some teams are more disciplined than others and this stat tells you how disciplined teams are (or how comfortable they are giving away new sets to get their defensive line set). Hard to argue with the frequency of calls against your side.

But for one team to be receiving nearly twice as many calls their way as another ... And be miles out infront of other team shows a clear bias toward that side. There's absolutely no way teams are nearly twice as bad with their discipline against Souths compared to Roosters..

At a glance of those numbers. It looks like mid to high 60s is about the average number of calls teams are getting. Souths have 50% more than that which is an insane discrepancy
If this was limited to this season only you could argue that it is just an anomaly but since 2008 the roosters have finished bottom 5 for penalties received in 11 of the last 13 seasons. Our highest ranking was 6 and 7 in 2011 and 2012 when coincidentally we didn’t make the 8. I’m not suggesting there is a conspiracy but as you say it is an insane discrepancy.

Same thing happened in 2014.

From memory they received 70-80 more penalties over the season than the next best team.

Makes sense for Souths. We do not wrestle and thus have given away very few ruck infringements. We do push the 10m though, and our inside 10 counts show that.

In attack, you slow us down, you negate everything we do in attack. We've always been a power team rather than a finesse team. It's been that way since the Maguire days. You try slow the ruck down vs the Roosters or Melbourne and they can still get you in other ways. It's not worth the risk. On the other hand, you slow us down you shut us out. It's pretty obvious for anyone who's watched us over the past 6-7 years and the main reason we haven't progressed past the prelim the past 3 seasons when finals footy takes hold.

They received 219. Canterbury were 2nd with 178. Chooks received the least that year with 135. The average for all other teams that year was159.

100% right. South’s struggle in finals as refs put the whistles away.

The above stats do not tell the story. It’s when and where you get the leg up from the ref that counts. So many refs will do the big even up once the horse has bolted. Or with the six again, one team will get multiple late tackle gifts while the other gets tackle one inches out from their own line.
The refs now control the possession flow of games and possession usually wins games. It’s the main reason we are having the majority of games boring blowouts because refs like Cummins Sutton and co always ride the top weight
