Penrith Junior League

The Penrith JRL commences tomorrow with 448 teams from 21 clubs. St Clair has regained its position as the largest club in the world by entering the maximum of 45 teams while St Marys has declined to 44 teams.

Windsor is the 3rd largest club with 35 teams and after a significant recruitment drive to strengthen its Jim Beam team it will field an A grade, reserve grade and a second division team. Windsor's presence has allowed a 6 team 2nd division comp meaning that clubs that had to play in Parramatta last year will be returining to the district.

It is hoped that the increased strength of the jim Beam will flow down to the A grade teams so that the Wolves wont just be making up the numbers as they did last year. Blacktown Pats have dropped out of A grade so it will be a 9 team comp.

Some player movements:

Brothers centre Jason Keays has transferred to Emu Plains. St Marys prop Shanelle Haumono is playing Jim Beam with Windsor but the Saints have signed Doonside backrower Scott Tyson and Blacktown City utility Setareki Rakabula who has experience in both Qld Cup and metro cup.

Apart from losing Tyson, Doonside have also seen Craig Trindall and Toto Nuimata go to Windsor Jim Beam. The Roos have recruited Mick Hawkins from Balmain Premier League and Mark Trudgett from Ryde Eastwood JB.

Henry Lawson CP has lost both secondrowers - Jermaine Awahou to Balmain Premier League and Dave Moffatt to Sydney Bulls JB. Former NZ Maori captain Tukere Barlow will coach the HLCP reserve grade.

A Grade Round 4

The round commenced at Windsor on saturday night as the locals hosted Doonside. The Wolves led for the first hour but then the game was halted for 20 minutes when an injury to David Nimmo required an ambulance. Doonside stormed home to win 28-18 through the efforts of Danny O'Keefe, Mick Hawkins, Luke Aitchison and Mark Trudgett. Best for the Wolves was Ed Manuel, who backed up for the Jim Beam side the next morning.

Blacktown ended the undefeated run of Emu Plains with a 36-28 win. Emu led 26-10 at the break but suffering from a 27-4 penalty count and at one stage having 3 men in the bin meant they could not hold on. Blacktown was best served by veterans Aaron Mclean and Robbie Addo as well as youngster Albert Peters. Peters was not required for Flegg this week but did answer an emergency call from Windsor Jim Beam to play a full game against Sydney Bulls a couple of hours before this game.

St Marys bounced back after an unexpected loss to Emu Plains the previous week to beat St Clair 64-16 and Brothers remained undefeated with a 66-6 win over HLCP. Colyton had the bye.

The Table is

8 Brothers
6 Emu Plains, St Marys, Doonside
4 Windsor, Blacktown City
2 St Clair, HLCP, Colyton

Ahh that would have to be the largest club in NSW cause Redcliffe have more than that.

They have 41 from U/7's to U/18's in the South-East Queensland Rugby League competition. Plus in addition they have Under 6 sides, I'm not sure how many I know they have at least 2, so thats 43.

Then outside of that they have:
- Development Grade
- Mixwell Colts (U/19's)
- Mixwell A Grade
- Premier Grade (Queensland Cup)

I will take your word on that Yakstorm but when I surveyed the numbers in the 800 team strong Brisbane Junior competition, I had a count of 41 for Redcliffe plus 3 senior grades making 44.

Ahh I'm just stating what I've heard from up north, alot of competition now between the South East Division competition and Penrith over who is the biggest in terms of numbers, clubs and support, so it wouldn't surprise me if Redcliffe are trying to big note themselves a tad :)

Still the biggest positive is that League numbers are up in both competitions.

St Marys suffered its second loss of the season as Brothers made it 5 in a row in the match of the round. With Darren Baker and Steve Hollis running riot, Brothers led 28-8 at half time. Saints were more composed after the break and got within 6 points before losing 40-26.

Doonside looked like they would get an early finish when they led Blacktown City 30-6 after 30 minutes. Albert Peters and Mick Hamer did some good things for city in latter part of the game to restrict the Roos to a 48-28 scoreline. Doonside have 7 players from Ryde Eastwood's losing 2002 grand final team. Former Kellyville and combined metro colt Luke Aitchison scored 4 tries for the victors whilst playing in the unfamiliar position of hooker.

In other games Windsor beat Colyton 70-14 and Emu Plains beat St Clair 70-10 while HLCP had the bye.

The table now reads:

10 Brothers
8 Emu Plains, Doonside
6 St Marys, Windsor
4 HLCP, Blacktown
2 St Clair, Colyton

Round 7 results: Brothers beat St Clair 52-38, St Marys beat Windsor 56-12, HLCP beat Blacktown City 32-30, Doonside drew with Emu Plains 30-30.

The table is: Brothers 14, Doonside 11, Emu Plains 9, St Marys 8, HLCP 8, Windsor 6, Blacktown City 4, St Clair 4.

I find it interesting that Doonside have only 3 out 34 players in the rep squads, the same number as Blacktown and less than 5 other clubs. Mick Hawkins played the whole of last year in the Balmain Premier League and now he is not ranked in the top 8 props in the Penrith A Grade. Sounds like the Roos are offside with the Junior League.
