MEDIA RELEASE - Phil Gould, Penrith Panthers executives visit PNG

Famous rugby league personality Phil Gould is part of a four-member Penrith Panthers delegation that will visit Port Moresby this weekend.

PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka when announcing this said they appreciated the gesture of the Penrith Panthers following almost 12 months of dialogue.
“We are looking at a long-term partnership with the Penrith Panthers and we appreciate their time and this great opportunity as they are the first NRL club that has reached out to PNGRFL,” Tsaka said.

Tsaka said Gould, the Penrith Panthers Rugby League Chief Executive Officer Justin Pascoe, Marketing Manager Anthony Frantzis, Complete League Coach Owner and Creator Graham Windeatt will arrive on Saturday and among the discussions being planned, will watch the SP Hunters game against Wynnum Manly Seagulls on Sunday.

Among some of the points to be discussed include a joint membership between Penrith Panthers and PNGRFL programs which include the SP Hunters, a player pathway for PNG players into the NRL system, coaching assistance and the possibility of a trial match between Penrith Panthers NSW Cup and the Hunters.
“We have been in discussions for over 12 months and over the weekend we hope to firm up things and sign an MOU to get this relationship to a stage where we can benefit from Penrith Panthers expertise in a wide range of areas, not just in football but administration among others.”

Tsaka said that this is an opportunity that PNGRFL wanted to maximise as much as possible which will “give us a template that we can use to foster similar relationships with other NRL clubs, who might be interested”.

Gould is very popular to Papua New Guineans because of his work as a Channel 9 commentator, and former coach of the New South Wales Origin side, but now holds the position of Executive General Manager for Penrith Panthers.

Tsaka said PNGRFL was very privileged to have this visit by such a high powered delegation and have planned a series of activities such as a Meet-N-Greet do with many of their stakeholders including sponsors, and the SP Hunters and fans who purchase grandstand tickets following the Hunters versus Wynnum Manly game.

Plaudits for PNG

Phil Gould
League Columnist

I had the great pleasure of spending last weekend in Port Moresby. We took members of our Panthers senior management team to meet with government officials, the PNG Rugby League Board members and their hugely supportive group of sponsors.

We also attended the big QLD Cup match on Sunday afternoon between the PNG Hunters and Wynnum Manly. It was a top-of-the table clash between two sides currently in the top three. The PNG boys were absolutely outstanding. They trailed 6-13 at half-time, running into a strong breeze. They then produced a stunning second-half to run out 38-13 winners.
There are some really talented young players in this PNG Hunters team and they are improving by the week. They all train full-time and judging by this performance, they will go very close to winning the QLD Cup this season. Port Moresby now boasts three new sporting stadiums which provide great comfort for spectators and competitors.

On Sunday more than 15,000 parochial fans turned out for this match and the atmosphere was terrific. Even the Queensland boys showed their appreciation at playing in front of such a big crowd by walking a lap after full time to applaud those who attended. PNG people are working so hard to develop their rugby league programs and they deserve our support.

Video: PNG Boys at Penrith

The Panthers are working closely with the rugby league loving nation of Papua New Guinea, and three of her favourite sons now call Penrith home.

James Segeyaro, Wellington Albert and Stanton Albert recently sat down with Panthers TV to discuss the challenges and rewards of life in Sydney and playing for the Panthers.

With a view to building on the relationship and setting up new initiatives, Panthers Head of Rugby League Justin Pascoe, Executive General Manager Rugby League Phil Gould AM and Head of Marketing Anthony Frantzis visited Papua New Guinea last weekend as guests of PNG Rugby League.

The Panthers delegation took this video with them to show how James, Wellington and Stanton are enjoying life on and off the field.
