Well they did play Ireland for a few years in a hybrid gameNot entirely sure that theres anything wrong with having a team of the season announced at year end. Even if they dont play anyone.

This is good
It’s kind of pathetic and it’s not on merit.
Does anyone remember which team these teams played against?

NRL unveil 2023 NRL Dally M Team of the Year
The National Rugby League would like to congratulate the below players who have been named in the 2023 NRL Dally M Team of the Year.www.nrl.com
*All NBA first team
* NFL All Pro Team
*NRL Dally M team of the year
*PFA Premier League team of the year
As an example, in the Premier League, the best players of the season are not selected in an "All England Team".
Are you serious? It’s not merit based. It’s used as a publicity stunt by a code desperate for relevance and headlines for the simple reason it has no international relevance. Naming a national side that plays nobody has to be seen for the drivel that it is.its most certainly a merit based all australian team. Is it pathetic that they dont play anyone at their own sport? maybe, but those are the breaks when you play a sport limited in professional geographic coverage to its country of origin.

I couldn’t care less what others say. Your code wanks itself off with this pathetic charade every year. The team is picked as a publicity stunt. Enjoy the wankery of it all old mate. You can believe what you want to believe. Others have given similar examples of all league teams. Its not exactly a rare thing. All players make that team based on merit. That they dont play anyone doesnt change that.
I believe it is merit based. It’s just another way of saying ‘best of the best’ but in doing it, they’re doing themselves a disservice as it just highlights how isolated their game is and it just comes off as absurd. Are you serious? Maybe I’m just having a laugh? You guys criticising this shit is just as embarrassing as the nutjobs on big footy posting delusional shit.
What's the difference with the Dally M team of the year?
Possibly but do we really care? Or just filling in time till this game starts?I believe it is merit based. It’s just another way of saying ‘best of the best’ but in doing it, they’re doing themselves a disservice as it just highlights how isolated their game is and it just comes off as absurd.
They announce the “all Australian” team the same week the nrl announced details of the pacific cup
And it’s greeted with appropriate mirththey announce the all australian team at the same time every year.
The vfl tried (twice) to merge with the nswrl under a merged game so they could benefit from tours by Great Britain
In 1914 the initiative for a merger appears to have come from the VFL. Elements within the VFL led by Charles Brownlow, Geelong Club secretary and delegate to the Australian National Football Council (ANFC) (with some support from the South Australian and West Australian Leagues), viewed the 1914 All-State National Rules Carnival in Sydney as much of a failure. Interest in the carnival and in Australian football in general was down compared to that in the fledgling sport of rugby league, which was drawing big crowds (especially the Australia-Great Britain tests of that year). A point not lost on the VFL – the 1914 Victorian Grand Final (Carlton v South Melbourne) drew only 30,000 odd spectators to the MCG compared to crowds of up to 41,000 for rugby league test matches during the same season! Brownlow (later memorialised eponymously in the Brownlow Medal) was of the opinion that a new combined sport of rugby league and Australian rules could produce a better spectacle, which would add thousands of pounds to the gate takings for games
Supporters of an Australian football/rugby league fusion (including once again the NSWRFL Secretary HR Miller) held the view that the future of football would be assured by adopting one code which combined the best features of both games
