I wouldn't say it was perfect. His timing makes it obvious he was looking to go around again for the right price but had no takers. He had to make the announcement before legal tampering opened up, otherwise it would have become 1000% obvious the league had retired him. He saved a little face, but not much.

The comments to Brady and BB after the AFCCG were kind of telling. He also retired on the same date he was released by the Colts (coincidence or no?). Don't forget all the crap from disturbed former UT trainer that he would have wanted out of the news cycle. He also had speaking engagements that he wound up the same day he started calling ex teammates and coaches. He literally started calling them right when he got back to Denver.

LA acknowledges that they spoke to him but Houston is currently being linked to Brock. He would have been crazy to come back and not run his own O and I think he knows that. No one was going to give that much power to a 40yo coming off a foot injury.

In the end it was all handled very well and you get the sense that Elway knew it would go down this way too.

It was obvious that his mind was pretty much made up a while ago, but wanted to wait until the last second to 'enjoy the moment' as long as possible. His body was done, he knew it, everyone knew it.
In ideal world he'd probably play until he was 90 if he could, but the human body doesn't work that, and a contact sport like football doesn't help.

Handled well, and excellent speech.
18 years in the league, wore 18, perfect symmetry, perfect time to retire, and went out on top.
