After suffering a comprehensive loss to the first placed Eels last week, Newcastle kept their very slim finals chances alive on Sunday afternoon when they defeated the Western Suburbs Magpies 46-18. It was sweet revenge for the Knights who handed the Magpies their first victory of the season earlier in the year.

Returning to the Knights side was fullback Nathan Hinton who was relegated after Milton Thaiday returned from injury into the Knights First Grade side. Hinton scored first points in the match in the 9th minute, when he scored beside the posts. Halfback Luke Walsh converted to put the Knights in front 6-0. In the 17th minute Wests fullback Shannon Gallant timed his run to perfection as he chased through a kick towards the posts from halfback Brett Oliver. Lock forward and captain Ryan Powell converted from in front to tie the scores up at 6-6. Five minutes later the Magpies hit the front through winger Makasini Richter who ran onto a cutout pass from five-eight Nathan Waters. Powell again converted to give the Magpies a six-point advantage. Nathan Hinton had other ideas about the possibility of history from earlier in the year repeating as he scored his second try of the half. Walsh converted to tie the scores again. With halftime looming, Walsh regained another set of six for his team with a perfectly weighted grubber into the in goal. From the ensuing repeat set, and with the halftime siren sounding, five-eight Chris Bailey threw a simple dummy, which opened up a saloon passage to the try line. Walsh again added the extras to give the Knights an 18-12 lead at halftime.

The Knights appeared to put an end to any hopes of a Magpies comeback when Walsh scored from the scrum-base 10 metres out from the Magpies tryline. Picking the ball up from the back of the scrum, Walsh threw a dummy, which was fallen for by the defence leaving him with open space in front. He ran through this gap in the defence, to score under the posts, converting his own try giving the Knights a 24-12 lead. Five minutes later, the Knights appeared to have put the issue beyond doubt when Corey Patterson ran on an angle from a Walsh pass to score 20 metres in from touch. Walsh converted again and the Knights were in control at 30-12. Magpies centre Ronald Prince scored out wide five minutes later and after Powell’s conversion, the Magpies trailed 30-18. In the 58th minute, Walsh was unfortunately carried off on a stretcher in what appeared to be a serious leg injury. This injury could be a double blow for the Knights as Walsh could have been eligible for the Jersey Flegg finals series. Tries to centre James McManus, Trent Salkeld and Patterson before fulltime enabled the Knights to boost their for and against back towards positive. Centre Brad Tighe took over from Walsh as goalkicker, successfully adding two of the three conversions as the Knights took revenge.

For the Knights, Corey Patterson ran strong all match and was rewarded with two tries. Before being injured, Walsh offered plenty of direction from halfback. Next week the Knights will look to continue their slim finals charge when they host the ninth placed South Sydney who suffered a 46-28 loss to the fifth placed Manly.[/FONT]
