Placebo - Meds

I have listened extensively to Meds, Placebos new album the last month. Whilst it is a good album overall, I can put the CD on and listen right through but I think it lacks GREAT songs that you could put on repeat for hours.

There producer apparently tried to take them back to their simple roots but I had enjoyed the way Placebo were evolving and Sleeping with ghosts is one of my favourite albums, With many songs on that album growing on me over the course that I became obssesed with the majority of the album at one point or another.

Meds is a good album dont get me wrong but I didnt find that any KILLER tracks grabbed me, whilst most reached the GOOD song stage of enjoyment that I am happy to sing along to.

I do have to say though that I listened to d/led copies of the 2 singles well before the album was released and as such was a little tired of them when listening to the album right through. This isnt fair as they are 2 of the better songs.

7.5/10 compared to Sleeping with ghosts which I would give a 9.5/10.

My reviews:

1 - MEDS - A strange track that when I first heard I didnt really like, yet it grows to be one of the most enjoyable songs. It would fit into the mid/fast pace rock category. (for placebo pace)

2 - Infared - An easy song to get to like right from the word go. It would fit into the mid/fast pace rock category.

3 - Drag - Again pretty easy to get into from the go and again a similar pace to the first 2.

4 - Space Monkey - The Album takes a turn of pace here and Space Monkey again will grow on you. The verse has distorted melody vocals but kicks into a different chorus. builds nicely. This song is a bit slower but the chorus has a strong feel about it.

5 - Follow The Cops back home - This is a slow paced song that is a typical slower moody type Placebo song. Enjoyable.

6 - Post Blue - This song picks the pace back up a bit to a heavier feel. A good song that to me didnt reach any great heights.

7 - Because I Want You - This was the first single in some countries and I had listened to it to death from my downloaded version. A good song that keeps a good pace and has some great lyrics that I really liked. Doesnt compete with the first single "The Bitter End" of "Sleeping With Ghosts" but is a good song. The tempo lifts with this song.

8 - Blind - Now another slower song but this one really grew on me and is one of the few that I purposely flick to to hear. Possibly the pick of the album.

9 - Pierrot The Clown - A slower depressing feel to this song, which is not a bad song taht maintains a sad fell throughout.

10 - Broken Promise - Featuring Michael Stripe from REM this song has a slower vrese that cranks into a heavier chorus. The differing vocals of Brian and Michael dont gel that well for me but it isnt a bad song.

11 - One of a kind - A bit more of an up tempo song this one but didnt do much for me and is one of the more ordinary songs. Didnt grow to much on me.

12 - In the cold light of morning - Another slower sombre feel to this song which has some odd lyrics about c**ks and dildos! Not bad but not great.

13 - Song To Say Goodbye - This song is the first single in some countries and is one of the picks of the album. It has grown nicely and has a good paced tempo and is good to sing along with. A top finish to the album.

'Black Market Music' and 'Without You I'm Nothing' are much better albums than Sleeping With Ghosts and Meds...

I've been a huge fan of Placebo for a fair while and went to great pains to get the super-limited edition of this album, but as much as I do love them, Meds kind of disappointed me in that there was really no standout track. As much as I've tried to find something even resembling a standout track over the last month, I've come up with nothing but a series of songs that are nothing brilliant, just listenable, and one that I can't stand.

Having said that, my favourite tracks from the album would have to be Space Monkey and Broken Promise, and the one that I can't stand is Post Blue. I find it unimaginative and boring. :(

Overall I'd give the album a 7, maybe a 7.5/10 if I'm feeling generous. (For the record, on my scale Without You I'm nothing rates a 9.5, Black Market Music rates a 9, Placebo rates an 8 and Sleeping With Ghosts rates about a 7.5)

I have only listened to select tracks for albums prior to SLeeping with ghosts. It is my aim to buy there complete back catalogue as I really enjoy there music.

However it seems im not alone in being disapointed with Meds.

Gonna have to get this if only for track 4

But seriously the tracks I've heard on the radio have sounded decent, and Placebo are a pretty reliable band when it comes to consistent quality releases.

G'day, Corgan-Molko. :)
Hi there, CliffyIsGod!
I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that you're a Pumpkins fan. Hooray! :D

Simo, you're definitely far from alone in being disappointed with Meds, I'm still hoping it'll grow on me a bit more, though it's looking more unlikely by the day :( Ah well, their older stuff is brilliant and I shall have to content myself with that.

Has anyone heard any announcements about an impending tour? Just prior to the album's release, it was mentioned that everyone should stay tuned to JJJ for a tour announcement "soon"... I've still heard nothing but would really like them to hurry up with an announcement, I think a month of suspense is quite enough! ;-)

My favourite Pumpkins songs would have to be Disarm, Tonight Tonight and Stand Inside Your Love. All their music is amazing though. :)

How about yours?

As for whatever it was that we were talking about, Black Market Music rates as the best Placebo album for mine, as for Pumpkins songs: Today, Pennies, Marquis In Spades, Plume, Lily (As of now).
