Hi,

I have been doing a fair bit of searching around this site and nothing seems to have totally and conclusively done it for me in regards to the topic.

Would someone be able to tell me how it all works ?

E.g. if it is stated in the news papers or wherever that "player X is payed 100,000 per season", what does this mean ? i.e. does that include 3rd party sponsorship ? Accommodation ? Meals/MedicalBills/Equipment ? what about superanuation and things like that ? Management fees.... the list goes on....

It's been a burning question on my mind for a while so if someone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.;-)

It's pretty much a mystery, and you can't always believe what is printed in the papers.

Here's how the NRL says it all works: http://www.nrl.com/nrlhq/referencecentre/salarycap/tabid/10434/default.aspx

But be aware that the papers get most of their stories on players off contract and offers made etc from the player managers, who have a vested interest in "Talking up" their clients. This means that the figures we read will often be inflated, because that helps keep the market value up for that player, as well a for players in general (included others managed by that same player manager).

Generally, if a figure is given (and if it can be trusted, ie is confirmed by a club source/website), then I'd imagine that it includes everything payable to that player by the club as part of the contract. I'd imagine 3rd party deals are negotiated/reported separately (because by definition they relate to a 3rd party), and I'd imagine all medical bills and equipment are paid by the club, forming costs of training?

Hey Top Tier Player... meet this real estate dude... top bloke, now buy that house for X, oh you mean who's this guy? He's an unofficial club sponsor, you'll see him again in 6 months when he buys the property off you for X plus briefcase and a wink.
