Players agree to pay cut

It is an honour to pull on a Maroons or Blues jumper. Paying players 15k-30k for the honour to do something so special is a disgrace.

($30k x 34 players) x 3 games = $3.06m.

Now it's $1.53m.

That money would be better spent on grassroots clubs that need it to survive.
Haha its not the 80's

if you generated $50mill a year for your company wouldn’t you expect a tiny slice? The players that actually create the product get back less than 8% of the origin revenue generated, now its less than 4%.

NRL, RLPA reveal cuts to Origin payments and salary cap as part of new CBA
NRL PREMIERSHIP

NRL CEO Andrew AbdoSource: AAP
The NRL and the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) have agreed to a revised collective bargaining agreement that will see a 6 per cent reduction in the salary cap in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the coronavirus forced the 2020 season to go on hold, the game was forced to reshuffle its finances.

It led to cuts at NRL head office and across the community game and further reductions will be rolled out over the next two years.

In a joint statement released by both the NRL and the RLPA on Tuesday it was agreed that:

– the 2021 salary cap would be reduced to $9.02 million.

– the 2022 salary cap would increase slightly to $9.11 million.

– State of Origin match payments would be $15,000 per player per game for the next two seasons. They were previously $30,000 per player per game.

RLPA director and Cronulla Sharks captain, Wade Graham, said: “We understand the significant impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our game.

“To help the game recover we believe it’s fair that we share in that and play our part by agreeing reasonable reductions to our payments and benefits.

“I’d like to thank Clint (Newton – RLPA CEO) and the RLPA team for the thorough process they have worked through in ensuring players are protected and respected in these negotiations.

“I’d also like to acknowledge my fellow players, we’ve continued to adapt and overcome the various challenges thrown our way during this period, which is something everyone connected to the game should all be proud of.”

The NRL has kept the top 30 squad, but reduced the number of development squad players from six to four for the 2021 season.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said: “2020 proved when we do things together, we get a better outcome for everyone. Today is another example of that.

“I want to thank the players for the professionalism, discipline and sacrifices they have made – not only to ensure the 2020 season proceeded but so the game can remain sustainable long term.

“I also want to thank Clint Newton for the leadership he has shown in securing a deal that provides security for his players, the game and our joint stakeholders.

“The deal is a fair reflection of the value the players bring to our game and the sacrifices they are prepared to make to ensure we remain strong in the years ahead.”

They get paid handsomely by their clubs. Playing Origin increases their worth when they go on the market.

Men and women dedicate hours of their spare time each week to keep junior clubs afloat around the country. There wouldn't be any Origin players without junior football clubs. That $3m should be used to keep the grassroots heathy so that there will be a State of Origin in 2050.

Junior clubs should be provided with a cleaner who is paid to wash the jerseys and locker rooms and staff to run the tuckshop. Facilities can be modernised. It will create jobs, which the ARLC can then gloat about to the media and lobby politicians for more money to be given to the grassroots to help create more jobs.

When you (the players) are the literal reason the money is being generated then you deserve a slice of the pie.

Now to see how this will work

Will existing players contracts be reduced by 6%?

Wiith no reduction in minimum wages will mean there are impacts elsewhere

Are higher paid players existing contracts being reduced - or do they stay as is

And future contracts will be signed to lower contracts as clubs try and save $600k

But they aren't. The game is still pretty strong almost despite the players of this generation. Most fans of the game are 30 and above I would reckon and became fans when they were about 10.
Players from the last decade have been the worst custodians of the game ever. They deserve a smaller slice of the pie.

Spot on. They act like spoilt brats and few of them are footballers. They've killed the culture that drew people to the game over the last 100 years.

Give me a footballer who understands the game over an athlete who only knows how to run hard and fast. It's no coincidence there are fewer ballplayers these days than any other period in the game's history.

The thing we really need is a coach salary cap. Maximum of about $300k for the whole coaching staff. They are a menace to the game. They stay up until 3am every night watching film trying to cheat the rules/refs etc.

In the context of this conversation, who cares how they act?

The fact is SOO generates $X income per year and the players are the primary reason for that.

It would be like saying Tom Cruise doesn't deserve a percentage of the box office for one of his movies because he is an asshole.
