Great to see PNG legends in there on the support staff. It is what is needed. They went backwards with Mal Meninga in charge. Great to see David Maed back. City-Country need to leave him alone and let him get on with his international career.

Good team, shame the 6 plus players in the uk aren't getting involved but they will hopefully build into something for next year.

Hunters dominate Kumuls line-up

By PNG LNG Kumuls Media Release
Wed 27th April, 04:49PM

Five debutants have been named in the PNG LNG Kumuls side for the Pacific Test against Fiji Batis on Saturday May 7, 2016 in Sydney.

Justin Olam selected as winger becomes Kumul No. 274. Stargroth Amean (275) has been selected on the other wing.

Watson Boas (276) gets the nod at halfback and partners brother Ase (248) who made his debut and only appearance for the Kumuls against France in Hull, England during the 2013 World Cup as halfback.

Henry Noki (277) whose performance in the Intrust Super Cup this season has been outstanding will make his debut as prop.

While the PNG Hunters dominate the selections - the Intrust Super Cup is well represented with Willie Minoga, Rhys Martin (Townsville) and Luke Page (Burleigh Bears) also selected.
Canberra Raiders Kurt Baptiste (278) has been named on the bench.

Coach Michael Marum (197) said a captain and vice-captain will be named later in the week.

The support staff to Marum include former Kumuls Arnold Krewanty (105) and Marcus Bai (176) as co -team mangers, head trainer is Solomon Kuluniasi and will be assisted by John Wilshire (186) and David Westley (172).

Stanley Tepend (198) and Leonard Tarum will attend the Test match as observers.
The 18-man team will assemble in Penrith west of Sydney on Monday, May 2 where they will undergo medical tests.

Kumuls named

BOAS brothers, Ase and Watson, will take on the massive responsibility of leading the Papua New Guinea Kumuls around Pirtek Stadium, Sydney, on Saturday against Fiji after the pair were named in the halves in Michael Marum’s side for the Pacific Test.

Ase, 27, has been the Hunters first choice play-maker for the season and will play five-eighth while younger brother Watson, 22, who is debuting for the PNG LNG-sponsored national side, slots in at halfback.

Ase is expected to be the chief play-maker while Watson will support in the distribution and kicking.
The siblings are the first brothers halves combination to play for the Kumuls. Coach Marum said picking the brothers was as much about their combination as it was about what they brought to their roles.
“Ase is our best half and he’s in good form in the Q-Cup,” Marum said.

“He was always going to be our first selection in the halves while Watson brings speed and has a good long kicking game, which we will need.”

Marum, who was assistant to former coach Mal Meninga in last year’s first Pacific Test against the Bati which PNG lost 22-10, said the national selectors and his staff were not going to make the same mistakes from previous years by naming players in unfamiliar roles.

“I think it’s important we pick players in their best positions and in roles that they are used to playing.”

Last year Meninga opted to push Noel Zeming to halfback and the Hunters centre saddled with the added responsibility struggled to lead the side while the lack of familiarity saw forward Luke Page mostly ineffective.
“We want those combinations between the players and with Ase and Watson, they have that so it will make their jobs easier.

“We have guys in the side who are familiar with each other and then we have players like David Mead, Nene McDonald and Kurt Baptiste, who add NRL class and experience.”
Titan Mead returns to the Kumuls for the first time since the 2013 World Cup, while McDonald was part of last year’s side that played Fiji.

There are five debutants in the side with Watson Boas, Stargroth Amean, Baptiste, Justin Olam and Henry Noki (Wan) set to run out on Sunday in Kumuls colours for the first time.

Hunters winger Olam muscled his way into the team off the back of an impressive debut season in the Q-Cup, reminiscent Gary Lo in 2014, and is fast becoming a cult hero for PNG fans.

Amean, normally a fullback, has been named on the wing, with Marum saying the Hunters custodian had proven himself with his workrate, defence and ability to find holes in the defensive line.
Canberra Raiders reserve hooker Baptiste is great inclusion and is expected to complement starting rake Wartovo Puara Jr.

Burleigh Bears prop Luke Page and Townsville Blackhawks duo Rhyse Martin and Willie Minoga all return to the Kumuls. Martin in particular has been in dynamic form over the first eight rounds of the Q-Cup and should start in the No.11 jersey.

Four shadow players – who have not been named – will wait in the wings and depending on injuries and will be called into the squad when Marum confirms his 17 next Tuesday.

Both were not part of last years PNG Team.
Watson is making his Test debut while big brother Ase is playing his 2nd test match after playing 1 match at the 2013 World Cup.

Kumuls foster legacy

THIS year’s Kumuls squad features a coaching staff made up of former players, who have been brought back into the fold to boost the team morale.

Much like the Queensland Maroons policy of ensuring the spirit of the jersey remains strong with the involvement of former stars and greats with the team on an annual basis, PNGRFL chief executive officer Bob Cutmore said having an “Old Boys” concept was essential to instilling a sense of pride in the Kumuls and to honour the history of the national rugby league team.
“The (Old Boys) legacy concept is a great one to get the players to realise the significance of the Kumul jumper and what it stands for, as well as the proud history and tradition behind it.
“Having former players involved in the team is good for team morale and gets the former players involved and contributing to the Kumuls,” Cutmore said.

The announcement of the Kumuls team to play Fiji next Saturday saw 18 of the best players from the Q-Cup, NSW Cup and NRL picked, and along with them, a group of men who had done it and seen it all before in the red, black and gold.

Included in the coaching and management staff was PNG’s greatest home grown rugby league player Marcus Bai. The former Melbourne Storm, Gold Coast Chargers, Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls player is one of the team managers, along with Arnold Krewanty, another former Kumul.

John Wilshere (St George Illawarra) and David Westley (Canberra Raiders/ Parramatta Eels) are the team’s trainers assisting Solomon Kuluniasi.

Digicel Cup coaches Stanley Tepend (Lae Tigers), himself a former Kumul, and Leonard Tarum (Simbu Lions) have been included for the trip to Sydney for the Pacific Test.

It's a little frustrating waiting for 1 test per year and half the side is out. Fair enough if they're "actually" injured or suspended but no Koroisau or Bukuya is a head scratcher.
Waqa Blake and RCG for a stupid trial game that isn't a trial game and Tariq surely isn't in frame for Origin. We'll probably see all of them run out for Fiji at the WC though.

MEDIA RELEASE - DAVID MEAD IS PNG KUMULS CAPTAIN

Gold Coast Titans fullback David Mead has been appointed captain of the PNG LNG Kumuls. Coach Michael Marum said from Sydney last night that Mead will lead the PNG LNG Kumuls for the Pacific Test against Fiji Batis at Pirtek Stadium in Paramatta, Sydney on Saturday.

“David (Mead) has been a PNG Kumul since 2008. He is one of the most senior players in the side now and with his NRL experience having played for the Gold Coast Titans since 2009 at the highest level, I have every confident he will lead the Kumuls well during our preparations this week and the game against Fiji on Saturday,” Marum said.
Marum said there will be no vice-captain for this game.

Mead represented PNG at the 2008 World Cup in Australia and the 2013 World Cup in England. He has played more than 100 games for the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL.

The soft spoken 27 year old from Tubusereia just outside Port Moresby in the Central Province said he was honoured to be named captain. “To play for Papua New Guinea is an achievement but to lead the Kumuls is an honour. I thank coach Michael Marum for this appointment and will give it the best I can for every Papua New Guinean,” Mead said.

All the players and staff gathered in Penrith west of Sydney last night (Monday) and underwent fitness tests.
“All the players are fit and healthy. We had a team dinner last night and all the players are in high spirits. We will have our first training run today (Tuesday),” Marum said.

A Fan Day will be held at the Pirtek Stadium at Paramatta on Thursday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm where all Papua New Guineans and Kumul supporters living in and around Sydney can go and meet the players and get photographs and autographs.

The PNG LNG Kumuls play Fiji Batis at Pirtek Stadium in Paramatta, Sydney on Saturday.
